There were dunces, parties, picnics—in fact, anything one could wish to divert one's mind from the worries of everyday life. We had a largt dince-hall and several parks, made by nature »nd cared for by man, benches and tables arranged amid I giant trees and beside sparkling water. Also, in these parks of na ture repa- ed hunterr and berry pickers and prospectors bent on either material benefit or idle va cations. All this in a land that the followers of Izaak Walton would call a Nimtod’s paradise. Today, I owing to fast automobiles and ex-! tensive hard surfaced ror.ds, most I of our local recreationisU soak the | seashore, inland lakes and far| hunting grounds, Elk valley passed j up; but will Elk valley come back? . Last Saturday night, according, to all reports received by me, there ' was one of the finest crowds gath ered at what was once known as Joyland, and where music and dancing were the main features. Among the refreshments served | were beer and wine, but, I have been reliably informed, there were I no, bad drunks, no roughhouse, I nothing that would impair the con viviality of sport seeking people. I am very glad to know this, and I hope that the future conduct of this place will justify the fine at tendance there, that Elk valley will find itself again as a place of amusement. It will partly repay the passing of our wildlife that was once our main attraction. Will amusement come back? After all, this is the Illinois valley, on the largest branch of the Illinois river that drains the largest territory. on Mrs. Harry R. Floyd and Mrs. J. M. Smock entertained last Thursday afternoon with a des sert luncheon for members of their bridge club at the former’s home in Holland. High schores were made by Mrs. Harry O. Smith and Mrs. A. A. Johnson, the latter also winning the traveling prize. o Mr. and Mrs. Earl Wockner and Albin Stewart of Medford were visiting friends in the valley last Sunday.
