Thousands of Trout
Planted In Valley
The State Game commission
sent six truck loads of Rainbow
trout to the valley last week and
were planted in Sucker creek, Cave
creek, Greyback creek, East and
West fork of the Illinois river,
Deer creek and Elk creek.
Two trucks made three trips into
the valley and thousands of Rain
bow trout were planted in the
streams.
Due to the Kerby Rod & Gun
club, who, through the grapevine
found that the commission had a
lot of extra Rainbow trout, and
asked the commission to plant the
streams of the valley. Rainbow
trout thrive in this section and this
planting is expected to stock the
streams so that good fishing will
be available in two more years
in all the above streams.

DRAINAGE WORK
BY VOLUNTEERS
Nearly all the men who volun
teered to put in a day at the Cave
Junction drainage work, showed
up Wadnesday morning and con
siderable work was done to help
finish the project.
Bad drainage places behind the .
theater and Bert Watkins proper-;
ty were shoveled out and ditches .
made to connect up with the main
canals. This will give temporary
relief from overflowing water, but
will not finish the project. Some
of the men are going back Fri
I
day morning to complete what the I
city volunteered to do, with the
promise from WPA officials that
the project would be finished if
the men did their work as vol-
unteers.
A crew of men will start to
work in the very near future on
the west side highway, and some
of them will be called over to the
drainage projects to finish the
work. Pipe layers will be brought
here to finish laying the concrete
pipe in fiont of the Watkins prop
erty and then the highway drain
age will be complete. This is ex
pected to be done in the next few
days.
The work on Deer creek road
will start immediately, also, but
it is expected that most of the men
from the west side highway will
be taken to Deer creek and the
west side finished in the spring,
however, a few bad spots will be
passable before winter.

THANK Thee for FAITH.
The humble trust that suns will rise again;
That over and through the universe there moves a plan,
A changeless law that governs wind and rain;
Constant—devising Thy beneficence for Man.
THANK Thee.for LOVE.
Greater than human passion or a close embrace—
The love that says all living stems from Thee;
Cares less than nothing for position, pride or race,
But calls its Neighbor all humanity.
THANK Thee for STRENGTH.
The blessing of work—the humble job or great;
The power to face each daily task begun;
The knowledge of our mastery of fate
And consciousness of worthwhile things well done.
Miner Taken
To Hospital
The plight of the miner, up in
the mountains all alone, was
brought forcibly to the minds of
the local people last week, when
Frank Loveland, an old time miner
living on Hansen’s Gulch, tribu
tary to Canyon Creek, was taken
seriously ill, and was not found
until it was too late to do him
any good, and died after reaching
the hospital in Grants Pass, He
died with compaction of the bow-
els.
A heroic effort was made to
save the old miner. When he was
found by one of his fellow miners
ill, his friend raced for aid, and
soon word reached Kerby of the
plight of Mr. Loveland, and Dr.
Edward Thorstenberg was sent
for. With the Dr. and Mr. Cham
berlain, an X-Ray specialist, and
Jim Hogue, they left for the cabin
of the miner and when the doctor
saw the condition, he ordered him
brought to the hospital immedi
ately.
Several miners were gathered
together and with the aid of a
horse with two solid limbs of a
tree attached to the stirrups of
the saddle, the men made a carry
all and they took turns about on
the end of the stretcher and he
was brought out to Kerby where
an ambulance was waiting to take
him to Grants Pass. There was a
car qn Tennessee Pass, and Mr.
Loveland was transferred to the
car there and brought into Kerby
and again transferred to the am
bulance.
He died at 9 a. m. Saturday
morning, after being in the hos
pital a short time. He was brought
out Friday night, arriving in Kerby
about 5 a. m. Saturday morning.
Funeral services will be held at
the Hull and Hull funeral home at
1 :30 p. m. Friday, November 22nd.
