Schools Become Civic Center of Community Life By H. H. WARDRIP County Superintendent of Schools The school system of the Illinois Valley is comprised of the Kerby Uni on High School and a group of twelve grammar schools. The Union High School district hus an assessed valu- tion of approximately >1,000,000,000 —>998,560.01 to be exact. The high school tax is 11.6 mills. This is a standard high school whose graduates are admitted to high er institutions of learning on par with graduates from other standard schools of the state. Kerby provides high school facilities for the gradu ates of the group of twelve grammar schools which are situated on a net work of good roads. The program of building, equipping and providing well trained and experienced teach ers, places Kerby high school fully on a par with any other high school of equal size in the state. Kerby high school has an athletic record covering a number of years of which she may well be proud. The rapid growth of the Illinois Valley and the consequent increase in high school enrollment have made necessary an almost continuous build ing program. Almost immediately following the completion of a fine gymnasium it became necessary to provide additional class rooms and equipment. The enlargement and ex tension of the heating plant and the construction of a new unit to house the shop and trades classes are among the most recent additions. The high school is very definitely the community center for numerous ac tivities. Adult volley ball and bas ketball teams alternate with high school teams in the use of the gym nasium. The Rod & Gun club and oth er groups hold their meetings in the high school. These “growing pains'* have kept the board members and pat rons busy using their pencils to fig ure ways and means of providing funds. The very harmonious and coopera tive relationship existing throughout the entire group of Illinois Valley teachers is really outstanding. Work ing with such a group is a pleasure and a privilege. The Illinois Valley Teachers’ Association meets each month to discuss matters of profes sional interest, coordinate their work and activities and enjoy informal and recreational programs. Each of the twelve grammar school buildings is a center for its own com munity. Most of these have existed as school units for a generation. It is possible—even probable, in fact, that the parents and, in a few in stances, the grandparents of some of the present school children attended Spencer's Headquarters for LINENS and CHILDREN S WEAR U. When the childhood memories, the educational, the social, the civic and, in a number of in stances, the religious life of a com munity are centered around one spot, that spot is revered and is not read ily abandoned.
