Smiling, Sanitary Service
On the Sawyer ranch near the
Caves Highway four miles from Cave
Junction, is located a thriving new
industry, The Illinois Valley Ice Co.,
Phil Sawyer, proprietor.
With a freezing capacity of one-
half ton every 24 hours and a tank
capacity of one ton, the plant can
supply the valley with all the ice it
requires.
There are two storage
rooms, one 10x12 feet and the other
8x10 feet which guarantees a supply
ail through the summer. The storage
rooms will store about 25 tons of ice.
The equipment is the very latest
in ice. The plant is equipped with
two Harris ice machines, the larger
machine with a capacity of two tons
being used exclusively for ice making.
The smaller machine keeps the stor
age rooms cool. The machines are
fully automatic and modern through
out.
Amonia is the refrigerant used.
Ammonia is the refrigerant used,
water through the cooling system of
the machines and ammonia condens
ers. In connection with the plant Mr.
Sawyer maintains a cream recveiving
station for the Del Norte Milk Pro
ducts Co. The plant was established
in June, 19557.
LEGION AND AUXILIARY ARE
ACTIVE SERVICE GROUPS HERE
Glenn Morrison Post No. 70 Am
erican Legion was organized in 1927
when their charter was granted. At
this time the Post was meeting in Ker
by where it was originally organized.
It is the oldest civic organization in
the valley.
In 1933 Elwood Hussey and Roy
Wilson built what was then known
as the Hippodrome building. Later
Mr. Hussey secured Mr. Wilson’s in
terests and subsequently sold the
building to the American Legion, and
it has since been known as the Am
erican Legion Hall.
The present officers of the Post
are: Cecil Slack, commander; C. Y.
Arnold, adjutant; Elwood Hussey,
service officer; Blake Miller, finance
officer; Gus Hart, chaplain; and
George
Wilson, sergeant-at-arms.
The Post meets the first and third
Wednesdays of every month.
All
American Legion Posts have the same
principals and slogans They work for
Americanism, community service and
child welfare; this Post sponsors a
local Boy Scout troop.
The Legion is a good factor in any
community and has made a place for
their organization which is respected
and admired by the general public.
The Ladies’ Auxiliary to the Am
erican Legion is just what its name
implies. An Auxiliary organization
exists in the Illinois Valley with the
same principals as the Legion.
The local organization has their
individual hall to the rear of the
Legion building where they serve
dinners and hold meetings, parties,
etc.
The group has many worthwhile
projects to their credit in the valley.
Aid has been extended in a number
of instances to destitute families in
donations of linen and clothing; the
ladies are active workers in the in
terests of the Veteran’s hospital at
Roseburg.
The present officers are: Pearl
Martindale, president; Marie White,
first vice-president; Sharlet Slack,
second vice-president; Lida Miller,
secretary-treasurer; Mary E. White,
chaplain; Emily Kellert, sargeant-at-
arms; and Amy Hussey, historian.
The Auxiliary has meeting dates
identical to those of the Legion.

WPA Begins Work
On Drainage Project
For Cave Junction
Many months ago the water com
pany tried to sponsor a drainage pro
ject for the city of Cave Junction
but through some red tape in the
government's specifications it was
turned down. The project lagged
and it seemed that the city was doom
ed to wade through the mud and wat
er for the rest of its existence, when
the county court stepped in and took
over the job of sponsoring the drain
age project.
With the court as sponsor, the gov
ernment changed the set-up and
agreed to put the project through with
a WPA arrangement. After many
months of waiting and suspense, the
WPA officials agreed
to all the
plans and on the 16th of April work
actually started on this important
project.
The State Highway Commission
donated over a thousand feet of tile
pipe which will be laid down the high
way in the center of the city and man
holes dug, so that the water will run
off quickly during the rainy weather
and the streets will be usable with
out wading through mud and water.
