Newsreel fans will need no in­
troduction to one of Idaho’s head­
line February events. On Febru­
ary 22 at Ashton, surrounded by
lofty, snow-covered peaks at the
head of the great Snake River, the
American Dog Derby is to be run
off. An exciting race which draws
crowds from every western state
and many of the eastern states,
the American Dog Derby attracts
entries from champion mushers
from every cold state and prov­
ince in North America. The twen­
ty-five mile race, consisting of
three laps around the eight and
one-third mile circle, has long
been a favorite subject for news­
reel camermen.

Approximately 1,219,345 eggs
have been taken to date by the
state game department from less
than 20,000 adult native searun
cutthroat trout held at the Alsea
trqut hatchery. This supply of
brood trout, the only one of its
kind in Oregon, has been develop­
ed through careful selection and
was recently reported by Dr. Fred
J. Foster, regional director of the
U. S. Bureau of Fisheries, to be
the largest and finest stock of
adult native cutthroat trout in ex­
istence.
The Commission plans to rear
cutthroat brood trout at the Alsea
hatchery for the purpose of stock­
ing Eel lake in Douglas and Coos
counties, which is being acquired
for development as a cutthroat
brood lake and from which it is
hoped that it will eventually be
possible to secure enough eggs to
supply the needs of the coast
hatcheries.
