f?*.- 1 . Couri er Gateway to The Oregon Caves Illinois Volley News A LIVE WIRE NEWSPAPER PUBLISHED IN THE INTERESTS OF THE ILLINOIS VALLEY AND SURROUNDING DISTRICTS Volume III No. 28 Cave Junction, Oregon, Thursday, November 16, 1939 A Letter From Former Resident Earl House, who was a teacher in a Portland business college be fore taking the position as instruc tor in the Kerby high school, re ceived a letter recently from a friend, M. J. Trubey, attorney in Portland which should help us to appreciate more the advantages Southern Oregon provides. Interesting parts of the letter are: Imagine my surprise when I started out to locate you last even ing to find you down at Kerby, Kerby, of all places! Why, you are in the land of “milk and honey” both literally and figura- tively. I lived at Holland many years ago and if you can get away for a day and go over to Holland and up to the Althouse to Brown town, (now burned) you may note some signs of our old hydraulic diggings. And at Takilma you may note signs of the old smelter; and the dredger below there where they actually take out some GOLD and in all the streams are fish, and T have caught my very large share of them. And enroute to Kerby turn off at Selma and go down the Illinois, noting the delightful “Devils Slide” some two miles from Selma, and, oh, so many places too numerous to mention. . . . No, I am not trying to sell it to you—If I actually owned that country I’d not sell one foot of it to anyone. No, but I suppose I would put up a sign inviting every one to come down and have a good time. When you can get away take a jaunt down to Galice and up that stream to note the intrusives there; it is a wonder of the Su preme Intelligence and well worth the trip. I trust to be down there next summer but I cannot commit myself as this past summer I had hoped to go down the little Chetco river, which heads just across from Kerby and runs down to Brook ings. I could not get away and may never make the trip, but it is one of the wonders of that Su preme Intelligence as seen by me from the summit. ... You see I mined and prospected down there and did not know of the country then. Yes, ad I took up some “Aura Fina” ... I almost envy you, your views in that land and only trust that you will like it suffi ciently to become reconciled and domiciled and, finally, well final ly located........... And I am wishing you no bad luck. Instead I am wishing you the best. Etc. Very Sincerely yours, M J. Because of so many absent from classes and illness among the teachers, the school boards of both the grade and high school at Ker by, decided to close until the epi demic subsided. Many of the high school stu dent were deeply disappointed because of having to postpone in definitely the play night which was scheduled for last Friday night. So many had taken ill that the cast of the plays had been changed several times and at last teachers and student postponed the affair. Many of the teachers took ad vantage of the vacation to go to their homes for recuperation. Miss Rhoda Mills, who was ill, left for her home in Forest Grove. Earl House is spending the week in Portland. Merl Farmer went to Eugene for the week. Miss Effie Sweet went to her home at Port Orford. Mr. Foerst is at his home at Murphy. It is expected the boards will keep the schools closed the first of next week, for there are only three school days, and let the sick children and teacher have a good rest. This is not definite, but a probability. ------------ o .
