V\ Again it has been reported, and later substantiated, that several deer have been found dead and spoiled, resulting from night shoot ing, over on the Rough-and-Ready flats, near Rockydale. Nom de nom. how much longer are the lovers of wildlife, the lovers of na ture, the true conservationists, people who have had homes estab lished here for years and expect to remain here, going to stand for this night shooting; how long are they going to stand for a few game hogs to go on destroying what lit tle game there is left? Well can I remember when plen ty of deer roamed all over the Rough-and-Ready. Scrub white oak grew everywhere and pro duced sweet acorns, favorite food both bear and deer, and at the right season it was not much of a trick to get fat buck or bear; but where are they all today? Night shooting is driving them away or leaving them to rot among the rocks and brush. Over on this same Rough-and- Ready, near the Redwood highway, A. A. Johnson has built an up-to- date, modern rustic home; a place of comfort and beauty. At this place is a tame deer, wild and tame ducks, and a couple dozen valley quail. There are “hunters" who are mean enough to go light into his yard and kill, but they know it would not be safe for them to do so, as they might just as well shoot Asa himself. Every man who owns land and pays taxes can be an A. A. Johnson if he sets himself about it. If he loves his home, if he loves the valley, if he don’t want to see the last wildlife de- stroyed, if he wants to see this valley built up and prosper, want it made more attractive to travel ers, want, a real home in a real climate, safe from extreme heat and cold, then let him get into his fighting clothes and become an other Asa Johnson. Those who are not afraid of the game laws hesi- tate to monkey with the laws of Johnson; your jest dern tootin’. i< i s i eve r mentioned o-------------- ~ .1!
