OFF IN THE CORNER
WITH PHIL SNORT
Dear Ed:
This letter is going to have for
its subject—“HATE.” More than
any other thing hate stands su
preme in the destruction of life
upon this earth; tribes hate tribes,
races hate races, nations hate na
tions and class hates class. Hate
breeds war, destroys property,
murders the innocent, destruction
and waste in its paths. I have
placed hate at the head of Wild
Life destruction and I expect to
prove it before I am through with

these letters.
All the way across this United
states are thre£ great armies of
hate. “The upper class, the mid
dle class' and the lower class.”
The “upper” class hates the mid
dle class; the middle class hates
the upper class and lower class;
the lower class hates both the up
per and middle classes; the rich
disdain and look down upon the
poor; the poor hate and envy
the rich and try to emulate them;
The employer looks at the em
ployee with hate; the employee
looks at his employer with hate;
the city hates the country and the
country hates the cities; organ
ized industrial hate prevails
throughout the land and it seems
that hate is everywhere and in
everything.
There is not a community in
the world that does not have and
hold its social classes. We have
them in the Illinois Valley. Our
“best" society would not be taken
notice of in Grants Pass’ “best”
society. The Grants Pass high so
cial society would not be tolerat
ed by the Portland uppers. Port
land would be given the high-hat
in Chicago. And Chicago could
not get a peek-in in New York,
Boston or Washington. The Aris
tocracy of England knows none
of the American herd—So what?
All the lakes in the United
States are being gobbled up by the
wealthy “sportsmen.” Club hous
es are established on all the im
portant ones and are only acces
sible to those who are financially
able to patronize them. No won
der the common herd hates them.
If a poor devil wants a duck, snipe
or fish, and manages to get them,
why, he is a poacher; if caught he
is persecuted for trespass or
theft. The poor hate all these
owners of fish and game “pre
serves;” this hate causes him to
take in any way, and what he can
not take he proceeds to destroy ,
so the privileged sportsman can
not get them.
This is all for this time. More
next week.
