Martin to fill the unexpired term of George Thrasher until after elec tion. If the court had searched the valley over they could not have made a more popular appointment, and we also believe as competent to act as a commis sioner as any in the county. George W. Martin has been in the valley for sev eral years. His first store was destroyed by fire in the city’s disastrous conflagration, but with confi dence unabated, he re-built and stayed on the job to build a bigger, better, industrious Illinois Valley, and his good judgment has not been misplaced. The court should also he congratulated on naming an Illinois Valley man, and we do that with a right good will. '0 0' LETTERS : •è Kerby, Oregon. I urge those who are eager to get such a system install ed to think first, then act and to be sure that the means used will not militate against the end they seek. The above statements are my own and are sincere. My period of service to the Kerby Union High School is dedicated to the up building of the educational inter ests of this community. There are many important phases of school work besides transportation. Should we let this one question hold back the development of the school and the education of our children? Let us make our con duct as adult citizens exemplify the principles and practices of democracy. Respectfully Ferd W. Jones, Principle Kerby Union High school. Dear Editor: On October 8, 1938, the legal voters of the Kerby Union High School dlistrict by a decisive ma jority voiced their opinion against providing a tax levy for student transportation for the present school year, it is my candid opin ion that this decision should be respected even though many feel that the decision was unjust to the school. We are living in a country dedicated to the princi ples of democrift-y and represent ative government. If this type of government is to continue to pre vail for us, we as citizens must practice these principles. The fu ture voters, those young folks now in our achoola, must be enouraged to understand and respect these principles. The rightful place of majorities and minorities should be, but often is not, clearly under at stood. This question is far from a dead issue, but for t hr will meet next present school year there seems 27th, at the hi little that can be done through leg ular school procedure to prpvide transportation. It is my opinion, as well as that of many others, that the proponents of bus trans portation should worn to win over to their side a considerable num her of voters who nt the recent election voted against the bus measure, if they desire a future election to go for transportation. 1 am afraid that recent develop ment- on the part of a few who favor the purchase of buses is ere ating antagonism against rather than winning votes for their side.
