A new budget has been prepared which we must
vote on Thursday, August 11, and in this one there
will be two items to vote on. An amount over the six
per cent limitation, and an amount for busses. Take
an interest in our schools and go out and vote.

FOREST FIRES
We do not. have many of the calamities that occur
in the middle west and south. We have plenty of water
in the spring freshets, hut seldom does this amount to
a handicap to the residents of the west.
However, in our great forests, every year we seem
to have devastating forest fires, and some years they
amount to a calamity. The Bandon fire was perhaps
the worst we ever had. Those of us who have never
been in a forest fire, do not know the terrible effects
of one. They always occur in the heat of the summer
when humidity is low and the added heat of the fire
makes it almost impossible to exist near one.
If we all could be thrown into action on a forest
fire, we would be mighty careful not to cause one by
careless camp fires or cigarette stubs, which have
caused many fires. The throwing away of a lighted
cigarette butt into the dry tinder of ferns and pine
needles will cause a bad fire if allowed to go un
noticed.
Let’s all make a resolve to take particular pains
about camp fires and smoking in the forests during
the fire season. If we are all careful many fires can
be prevented. And if you should ever happen to see
someone deliberately start a fire, we would not take
the trouble to notify the authorities, we would take a
good club and use it to the best of our ability, right on
the spot.
It is our duty, if and when we see a fire .just get
ting started, to put it out if possible, and if not, not
ify the nearest forest service agency as quickly as
possible. We all want to protect our greatest heri
tage, the forests, so during this fire hazard season,
let’s all do our best to protect the forests.

Figures released this week by
the National Youth Administra
tion in Oregon show that youths
employed on work projects are
successful in finding employment
with private business and with
other governmental agencies. Ivan
G. Munro, Oregon NYA head, in
dicated that recent studies showed
that during the last six months
period 213 young workers be
tween the ages of 18 and 25 years
had successfully obtained work
with private enterprise.
Forty-three additional employ-
ees found positions with the gov-
ernment in other fields, while 6
more returned to school. 21 youths
were released because of ineffi
ciency. During this period an aver
age of 850 young persons were
employed monthly on work pro
jects by the Youth Administra-
tion.
