Granges Basketball Contention Chamber Sponsors Meeting An unusual busy meeting of the Illinois Valley Chamber of Com merce was held last Tuesay noon and an overtime session was nec essary to complete the business at hand. Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Bernd, vis itors and A. It Kuznik of the Camp U-Rest were guests at the meeting. Mr. Kuznik is now a member of the Chamber. Elwood Hussey told the mem bers that much criticism is mani fest on the new proposed rural mail route. He said Mrs. Rila Pearsall had come to the meeting and was interested in the mail question. President Drews called on Mrs. Pearsall for a statement. “I can’t see any advantage in changing the route,” she said. “1 was told that the ultimate pur pose of the proposed change was to discontinue small postoffices.” She is in favor of leaving *the present route just as it is. C. E. Lawson, of the O'Brien postoffice, said if there is going to be a new route, it should start from the O’Brien postoffice .then go to Takilma, Holland, down the Caves highway to Cave Junction and back to O'Brien. He believes that this plan should be adopted if there is going to be any change in the present route. A. A. Johnson voiced his disa- proval of changing present star route on the Redwoods highway. Mr. Hussey said that last year's contract called for $8,941. He believes it is the freight that lakes so much time, and if that was eliminated, the stage would have no trouble in making connections. President Drews called atten tion to the fact that the contract ors did not have to get the mail into Grants Pass until 6 p. m. He said their contract reads not later than 6 p. m. This, if carried out, would miss train connections. Mrs. Pickett said that such an arrangement had been put into effect in Klamath county and later the department discontinued two postoffices. Mrs. Pearsall said that after the News had been published last week, a canvass had been made of residents south of Cave Junction, and none were in favor of the change. Mr. Hussey thought that a com mittee should be appointed to call a mass meeting where the entire proposal could be explained, and that all residents affected should attend and voice their views. A A. Johnson moved that such a committee be appointed, not nec essarily members of the Chamber, but people who were affected by the change, and hold a mass meet ing, and have petitions signed if the proposal was voted unfavor able. Mr. Hussey seconded the motion which carried and the fol lowing names were placed on the committee Mrs. Pearsall, chair man, C. E. Lawson, A. A. John son, Wm. McLean, Harry Floyd, Harry Messenger, Mrs. Addie Martin, ami Mrs. Chas Babcock. Mrs. Pearsall called the mass meeting for Friday afternoon at 2 p. m. in Mrs. Pickett’s restaur ant where the noon luncheon is served. All those interested are urged to attend. Mr. Johnson announced that there would be a very important meeting of the land and water conservation of the Illinois Val ley, which will be held in Bridge view in the Grange hall Friday night, February 25th at 8 p. m. He urged all to attend, and asked that the Chamber send as large a delegation as possible. O. V Humrick was introduced and he told his listeners some very interesting information concern ing the goat industry. Mr. Hum rick has been working for months trying to get this industry thor oughly established in t-he county.
