Have you thought of shopping the stores in the Illinois Val ley? If you have not, it’s an idea worth working. Our communities are only as big as are patronage makes them. If we want larger, better stores, the way to get them is to buy your merchandise from our stores, then they can carry larger and better stocks. But when we send good money to mail order houses we are building up some other place to the detriment of our own. Can you imagine a mail order house contributing to any activity in this valley; helping our schools, or even a dollar for the Cave City Fire department? Just try and get it. But our valley merchants are the ones we call on for help—They are the boys who are putting their shoulder to the wheel to help build a better valley. Now that we are in the home stretch, let’s do our shopping at home. Try your local merchant first. He will appreciate your patronage. ----------------- o----------------- AN EMERGENCY EXISTS Cave City’s Volunteer Fire department has been organized for some time. The boys gave secured a truck, hose, nozzle, pumper, and these are all paid for. We have now on hand material to construct a tank to go on the truck. This is not paid for, and funds MUST be secured to pay for this material at once, and the tank MUST be built at once and put into oper ation. An accident can happen to us any time, and if it should come before we are prepared, we would all say, “We should have put that truck in operation.” Sure we should. Why don’t we? “Procrastination is the thief of time.” W°’re stealing plenty. The News hereby starts a contribution of $1.00 to help pay for the tank. If 20 other citizens do likewise the job is paid for. Who will help? Give your dollar to Chief Ole Jones, Treasurer C. Y. Arnold or leave it at The News office. Let’s GO! ----------------- o----------------- SHOE ON THE WRONG FOOT chandise, and this put thousands of American work men out of a job. Then the American manufacturer went to these foreign countries and established branch manufacturing establishments that elimi nates our labor forever. The goods that were for merly made here and shipped abroad, are now manu factured in those foreign countries with cheap labor. Does the republican party mean to say they would not protect that American industry in foreign fields? They created the situation that exists now, and the wealthy manufacturer would certainly see to it that they would be protected. The present administration is doing their best to protect American property in China, and trying to keep out of serious difficulties in so doing, and so far have done a fine job. But because the Japs sunk a gunboat and a few American oil tankers, the repub licans are trying to discredit the administration by asking, “What are the Americans doing there any way ? The republican party made the tariff that put American industry in foreign fields, now they ask why they are there? The Orient is the best export field the Pacific coast has. But the eastern senators can’t see this far. ! The shoe is on the wrong foot, that’s all. The demo crats are in power. -----------------o----------------- GOD STILL ANSWERS PRAYERS Remember well in times of stress When you would all desires express, That God still answers prayer. For men in prayer to Him have turned Throughout ull ages, and have yearned For Him, and found themselves ne’er spurned; They found He answered prayer. No prayer can e’er ascend in vain; He gives His best, then gives again; For God still answers prayer. We often fail to comprehend The things of God, our truest Friend, But of His good there is no end, For still He answers prayer. And it’s re markable the frame of mind politicians squirm un der when they are out of power. Their toes are out ’from under the table and can’t get stepped on like those underneath. The republicians just now are making a great hull abaloo over the Japanese situation—What they would do—And what are the Americans doing in China any way? Why don’t they come home? Two Marines to every American citizen in China kept there to protect them, etc., etc. My, what a mess we are in, according to the repub licians. May we respectfully ask WHAT the republicians would do if they were in power? Would they say to all Americans in foreign ports, "Come home, you have no business there?" We know better than that, for it was the republican party that put a tariff on foreign merchandise and then the Americans were told that if they put that tariff on, 39 foreign countries would retaliate with an equal tariff on American goods. The tariff was passed, and the 39 foreign countries made good their threat and put a tariff on American goods, thus making it unprofitable to ship our mer- IÜ Drug Store .
