PROMINENT POLITICIAN.
CHICAGO, March 18. A promi
nent Chicago politician, now under
surveillance by the United States au
thorities, Is the head of the white
slavers of Illinois and possibly of the
whole middle west, according to Blair
Coan, official prober for the state sen
ate committee engaged here In Inves
tigating starvation wages and vice in
this state.
"We know the name of this man,"
Coan said, "and although he Is now
out of the city, detectives are keeping
an eye on hlni, and when he returns
he will be subpoenaed and compelled
to testify. At the same time the men
associated with him will be sub
poenaed, and if they refuse to testify
they will be jailed."
Lieut-Governor Barrett O'Hara
said this afternoon that the starva
tion wages disclosures had resulted In
an exodus of country girls, many of
their parents having called them
home.

TON COAL CARGO.
MARSIIFIELD, March 18. It was
stated today that five hundred tons
of coal were lost overboard when the
barge Nehalem went on the spit at the
mouth of the Sluslaw river. The
tiarpe was being towed by the tug
Rosroe, which crossed In safety, but
the bare struck the spit and was
driven on the sands.

Generous rainfall, ending the longest
continuous drouth since 1899 was
general throughout northern Califor
nia yesterday and last night. The lo
cal forecaster reports heavy rains
and snows In the valley and moun
tain districts. The precipitation Is
a God-send to the farmers and rattlo
ralBers In the entire northern pnrt of
