Unshed by 200 deputy sheriffs and anger-crazed citizens, the thug who assaulted 14-year-old Myrtle Huff, was Instantly killed late today. The object of a hundred bullets, the fellow dropped, riddled with shots as the posse swooped down up on him. At bay In the bottom of a box-like canyon In the Santa Ana hills, the (lend Invited death by leaping Into the open and defying the posse to take him. At the. command of Sheriff Rud dock the enraged officers, ranchers and citizens swooped down the sides of the canyon, firing as they went. Be fore their quarry could fire more than two or three shots he fell a writhing heap. Xo one was Injured by his final volley. The man was apparently an Amer ican. He was about 34 years of ago. In the pockets of the ragged clothes he wore were hundreds of 4 4 calibre cartridges for the revolver that he had used. Ruddock and his posse started for Santa Ana after ending their manhunt. Some of you will remember how we derid ed, and how emphatically we did It. Finally someone said 'let's go up there.' We sprang to our feet and a few minutes later the entire con gregation was pouring Into the Mc Lean dwelling, crying, laughing and shaking bands and H talking at once. But there came a time when ther felt that for tbe better educa tional advantages for their children they must change and In January 1S99 accepted a call and removed to the Third Presbyterian churcn to SANTA ANA, Cal, Dec. 10. After assaulting Myrtle Huff, H, and es caping to the hills east of Santa Ana, where lie was pursued by a party of deputies, an unidentified thui; todav shot and killed ruder Sheriff Roberts Squires anil wounded Deputy Sheriffs Albert Plater nnd Stacey, nnd Hurry Tubbs and William Culver, citizen deputies. Plater was shot through the bead and his wound mav move fatal l.nt- icr the man was reported surrounded in a canyon. Ho Is heavily armed. Sheriff Iliiddock at the bead (,f CO deputies drove the man to cover after a first exchange of shots In which Squires and three of his companions fell. Ruddock at once ordered his men to deploy about the mouth of the can yon Into which the fellow disap peared. A posso In an automobile was dispatched to the opposite end of the gorge to cut off escape In that direction. Along the top of each rim, deputies armed with Winches ters were stationed at Istervals of 200 yards. Messages from the posse late today asked that more men be rushed to tho scene. Dfwpcratlo Ifenvlly Arnied. It also was stated that the desper ado Is known to be heavily armed and that without doubt there will be more shooting before he is captured. The assault on the Huff girl occur red late last eveaing at the ranch of her brother-in-law, William Cook, with whom she made her home. Hear ing the family dogs barking near the barns, the little girl, with her sister. Jennie, aged 7, rushed out to investi gate. At the barn she was seized by the Bend, who covered ber mouth with one hand while be seized the lit tle sister with the other. With bis foot on Myrtle's body, the man then bound little Jennie to a post and dragged her sister around tho corner of the barn. After five minutes had passed Cook wondering at tho chlldrens' absence, started for the bam. He was met by the terrified younger child who cried that a man had caught her sister. When Cook appeared on the scene the rufflnn fled. Cook nt'oiice telephoned the alarm to Santa Ana nnd Huddock, at the head of a posse, started for the Cook ranch In automobiles. Deputy Stacey Shot. Twice during tbe night, the fui;l- tvle was sighted, but each time ho es caped. Several shots were exchanged and one of these struck Deputy Stacey In the shoulder. At daybreak today the man ap peared at the ranch house of Kdward Chambers, six miles east of Santa Ana and demanded breakfast. He de clared lie had just killed a man and that ho Intended to kill olherB If lie could not escape. According to the story ho told ut Chambers' house, ho had firearms hidden In n nearby gul- ley. Chambers telephoned nt once to Santa Ana and couriers were dis patched to find Huddock. Other pos ses nt onro were organized, many cit izens being sworn ln as deputies. I'ohso Surrounds I'uulllve, It whs shortly before noon that the sheriff's posse came upon Its quarry near the mouth of a canyon In the Santa Ana hills. Dropping behind n boulder, tho man opened fire with a revolver. Ho fired four shots before the officers could reply and at each of the four reports a man fell. He then lied Into the canyon, while Hud dock ordered his men to their sta tions along the rims and at the end. How long tho man can hold out In his stronghold against tho posso or whether Ruddock will elect to rush him or try to starve him out. Is prob lematical. The follows tigerish stand against the officers hns caused the bo lief that ho will never bo taken alive. The canyon In which ho bus taken lofugo Is n nnrrow sluice In tho foot hills. In only a few places would It be possible for him to escape over the rims. These nro beliiR guarded by squads of men In nddltlon to tho reg ular lino nlong the gorge. Telephone reports from ranch houses nro to the effect that the wounded men would be given medical attention there un til they can be brought to Santa Ana.
