SIDELIGHTS OX THE
REPUBLICAN CONVENTION.
A sensation was caused at this
time by the announcement that the
Wisconsin delegation had decided to
vote for Governor McGovern of that
Btate for temporary chairman. This
was a distinct acquisition to the
Roosevelt forces, as the Wisconsin
delegation had heretofore refused
point blank to consider aay amalga-
matlon whatever with the Roosevelt
people.
As the hour for calling the conven
tion to order drew near, the delegates
began to climb on to their chairs to
get an uninterrupted view of the pro
ceedings. The main floor was Jam
med at 11:45 and thero was only a
scattering few vacant seats In the
gallery.
A few minutes before 12 o'clock

more people had been admitted to

to be cremated, following an inquest
here this morning by Coroner

MEYER NOT TO RESIGN.
WASHINGTON, June 18. It was
emphatically denied, both at the
white house and the navy depart
ment today, that Secretary Meyer,
who has gone to his home at Ham
ilton, Mass., has any intention of re
signing from the cabinet.
Meyer Is suffering from stomach
trouble, and has gone home to es
cape the Washington heat.
