Is no lack of co-operation on the part
of the Southern Pacific company.
Nothing would please us more than
to have sufficient tonnage offered to
load some of the cars we have been
sending out of here empty and you
may be assured this business will be
well taken care of.
" 'The rate on eggs to Portland Is
82 cents per hundred pounds or a
trifle over a cent a dozen. Surely
this Is a very low rate. It Is not fair
to compare our egg rate with the
fruit rate to the east as this rate has
on hand today but the benches were
packed with friends of the Aliens.

To Cut Street Lighting Rate.
Quite a protracted discussion re
sulted at the council meeting last
n'ght over the charges the street
lighting cost for Grants Pass. Mayor
Smith had the bill of the lighting
company in his hands and was scan
ning It. The rate is too high
thought the mayor. So did Everton.
Strieker defended the present rate.
"If you look up what other places
are paying and what It costs to gen
erate electricity you will see that
Grants Pass is not paying too stiff
q ,tP " said the doctor. McLean re
plied that he and other members of
the council had been Investigating
other towns in Oregon and Washing
ton and found that Grants Pass was
paying more than any of them.
You should confine your Investiga
tions to towns the Blze of Grants
Pass," said Strieker, and added:
"Reports from municipalities In Cal
ifornia show what it costs to gener
ate electricity and show what those
towns must assess themselves where
they own their own plants. You
ought to get those reports and read
them." Mayor Smith replied that of
all towns on earth the California
towns, the entire state, were the
worst graft ridden and corrupt In
the country. That there was this
and that Incubus in the form of a
swarm of unnecessary salary-drawing
parasites, which saddled costs on the
people, all of which entered into the
expense of lights and everything
else. The mayor cited Instances
where this or that school had law
yers attached drawing heavy annual
salaries, with nothing to do. The
mayor did not think California was
a place to go to get costs on any
thing. And the mayor added that
this electricity business was a maze
of watts and chicanery from end to
Caldwell smiled. Everton
moved that the rate for 32 candle
power street lights be cut to 75
cents a month and cluster lights to
$1.25 a month.
"Second the motion," said Clarfc.
An ordinance was proposed to thlp
