(By Clarence E. Wlentrout, Grants Pass.) SELECTING THE SOIL Alfalfa can be grown In a variety of soils, grading from sandy to heavy clay and gumbo, although with un favorable soil . conditions, such as light sandy, boggy, wet where water stands, or sub-irrigated, it Is more difficult to establish a good stand. A deep fertile loam, or clayey loam well supplied with the mineral elements ot plant food, is the most favorable soli for growing Alfalfa. The crop needs a well drained soli. On wet land with underground water too near tbe surface, alfalfa will produce sparingly 'and the plants will soon die. Alfalfa will not thrive on land larking In lime which shows an acldj reaction. Some old lands become Originally poorly supplied with lime, after years of cropping have become so deficient in that material that they will not produce alfalfa succes sfully until the soil Is fertilized oy manuring and the acid condition is corrected by the application of lime, limestone, or land plaster. It is a fact well-known to old clover growers that clover cannot be readily started on worn out lands until the soil has been improved In composition and fertility by manur ing. The same Is also true of alfal fa Innd, and It is often advisable be fore Boedlng alfalfa on this or worn land to take a year or two to pre pare the soli by green manuring, deep plowing and thorough cultiva tion with the application, also, when possible, of barnyard manure. Alfalfa may be started on very thin land deficient in nitrogenous material if it contains a sufficient supply of mineral elements of plant food. But under such conditions It starts very slowly and it may not produce a profitable crop for a year or two after seeding. Yet In time when the plants have established a deep system of roots and are well supplied with nitrogen-getting bac teria, the alfalfa may make a thrif ty growth and produce crops without manuring or fertilizing. Chapter II to be printed later, will deal with another phase of the growing of Alfalfa. SANTA FK OFFICIAL IiOSES IN RACK WITH DEATH. LOS ANGELES, Jan. 31. W. O. One of the most successful enter prises that has been undertaken and carried out In this county within tha last two years Is that of the Madrona Land company, the holdings ot which are located on the south side of the Applegate river, opposite tbe Murphy postofflce. ' The land was purchased In 1909 and work of clearing and cultivation began at once. When the proper time arrived the planting ot fruit trees was undertaken and carried out In a most thorough manner. The 1.000 acres which compos the holdings of the company, w'e divided Into five-acre and 20-acre tracts, and planted to Spltzeuburg and Yellow Newtown apples and Bart lett, Cornice, Winter Nellis , and Da Aajon peart. Moat of these trees are now two years old and they c "3 fine speclmeus of practical hortlc ture, showing good cultivation ? I general care. There Is no be: . r land t0 be found In any country tl u that which comprises these yo ng orchard tracts. These fruit tracts have all bees, sold to good buyers In Alaska who will, at the proper time, take up their residences on the property that they have purchased. The general . Idea of the Alaskan Is to make hit pile In the north country, then re lire to some place where climate, soil and people are to his liking, and l may be considered a compliment to Josephine county to have been selected as the place of residence of these desirable homebullders. Some few of these people have lo cated on their places here, but the most of them will be coming alonsj within the next two or three years. The men . directly responsible tor the success of this enterprise are C. 1. Hobart, a prominent retired Alaskan, who Is general manager of , the company, and O. H. He Is another Alask an who knows the big north count J and its people to perfection, and they have shown their confidence la him many times. BADEN-POWELL ARRIVES. i NEW YORK, Jan. 31.
