that W. IT. Pateman, flagman for
the Southern raclfic In Grants Pbsr,
died In the Southern Pacific hospi
tal In Portland Friday, the cause of
death being general debility. Hr
Pateman was about f5 yenrs of ago
and for a number of years has been
a fhitflllar figure lu the railroad
yards of this city. The remains will
bo brought to Grants Pass for burial.

NORTH YAKIMA PEOPLE

One of the Interesting sales of
real estate of the paBt week was
consummated by Judge H. H. Bus
ier, the property being the Hurl
burt tract of 16tt acres located one
mile west of the city on the river
road.
The purchaser waa Frank Smith,
a business man of North Yakima,
Wash. The property la one ot the
most valuable In Rogue River val
ley, and the deal speaks volumns for
Southern Oregon climate and soil
when Washington residents pur
chase property here.
The ranch Is one of the show
places around Grants Pass and from
Ita trees Spltzenberg apples were
obtained that captured first prixe at
Ashland two years ago, leading ' a
large number of exhibits from the
valley. The ranch contains five acres
of one-year-old newtowna, aleo a
few bartlett pears. The soil Is a rich
alluvial bottom land, and the loca
tion Is Ideal, being on one of the
permanent drives down the valley.
Prof. E. R. Hurlburt of the city
schools has been the resident manag
er of the property and It Is In keep
ing to mention that the orchard has
a fine crop of fruit. The tract will
be tmdor the gravity ditch Irriga
tion system. The consideration was
around $10,000.
Mr. nnd Mrs. Smith will make
their permanent home here.

Mrs. Alice Julia Rummel wife
of W. A. Rummel of this city, died
at the family home on Third and B
streets early this morning.
Mrs. Rummel had beeu a sufferer
from cancer of the stomach for the
past year, and had been confined to
her bed for the last three months,
until death today released her from
her suffering. ' ,
Mrs. Rummel waa bom in Iowa,
December 20, 1855. and was near
lug her 66th birthday anniversary
when she was called to her last
home. Besides her husband, W. A.
Rummel, Bhe is survived by her
mother, Mrs. A. J, Close, two slBtera,
Mrs. Mabel Calloway, and Mrs. Lena
Jones, and one brother,. Clarence
Close, all of this city; and a brother,
Frank Close of Eugene,
i Mrs. Rummel was an estimable
woman and enjoyed the love of
many friends.
! Funeral services will be held at
the home at 10 o'clock Wednesday
forenoon, Rev. F. C. Lovett of the
First, Paptlst church officiating. In
