VANGUARD MINE SHOWS
WIDE VEIN OP ORE
WEEKLY ROGUB RIVER COURIER
PAGE 8KVICN
Among the many valuable mining
properties of Josephine county Is the
property of the Vanguard Gold and
Copper Mining company, located 7
miles west of Kerby. Officers of the
company are Samuel Bowden. George
Calhoun, W. r. Home. H. C. Dixon,
and Charles Phillips.
The property consists of four
claims along the same ledge run
ning up a steep mountain, which fur
nishes an ideal tunnel site near the
base of the hill. Mr. Bowden Is man
ager of the mine, and he has pro
jected a tunnel 5x7 on the vein and
Is running In on ore, which Is a heavy
sulphide, gold and copper, and Iden
tical with the Almeda. The two ores
cannot be told apart from a physical
standpoint. This -tunnel Is now In
80 feet, along the hanging wall, and
the breast Is all ore. How wide the
ore body Is, is not known as no croBs
cut has been made to the foot wall.
That It Is a large body. Is evidenced
by all geological conditions. The
bore has gone In without a single set
of timbers, except 'at the mouth of
the tunnel, where one set holds the
entrance firmly. ,
Timber for mining Is abundant and
of the best quality. Water for a
treatment plant Is accessible, more
than can ever be used.
It Is the Intention of the principals
to arrange for funds with which to
Bend the tunnel In 300 feet further.
The hill will give this tunnel 1,500
feet depth, or rather 1,500 feet of
Hacks. This means that a vast ton
nage can be stoped and handled by
gravity. Also that not a drop of
water will have to be pumped. It
will be the cheapest and most satis
factory of all underground mining.
The ore body will be crosscut from
time to time as the tunnel goes In,
thus will Mr. Bowden be able to com
pute at any time his tonnage blocked
out. Speaking of the .mine Manage!
Bowden said:
"While this property can not be
called a low grade mine, yet we will
call this one to predicate what I wish
to say regarding ores In this county,
and that is, that It is the big low
grade mines that will make Josephine
county great as a mining reelon.
There is more wealth added to the
nation and to the world in general
each year from low grade mines than
from high grade mines. The high
grade do not have the tonnage so per
sistent In continuity as the big low
grade mines, like our Vanguard for
Instance. We have a valuable proper
ty, and It will make one of the big
mines on this coast."

SURVEYORS BUSY IN
THE MERLIN YARDS
Busy Saturday at Merlin was a
surveying party in the employ of the
Southern Pacific, and on all sides at
that ttown, the question was, "will a
line be surveyed from here Into Illi
nois valley?"
The surveying crew was busy
around the depot 'property and no
stralght-away work has yet been un
dertaken. Whether it Is a fact that
Mr.O'Brien intends to chastise Grants
pass, wnetner he Is bluffing or
whether the work at Merlin Is merely
local is the present question.
Arrival of the surveyors has caused
no excitement on the real estate ex
change of that city. ;

F. A. Elliott, state forester "lias re
ceived the following letter from Con
gressman Hawley at Washington:
Mr. S. A. Elliott, State Forester, Sal-
era, Oregon.
My Dear Mr. Elliott: Since the re
ceipt of your communication asking
my aid in securing a proper federal
allotment of funds for use In the pre
vention and suppression of forest
fires in Oregon, I have taken this
matter up with renewed activity and
have had the matter before both the
Secretary of Agriculture and the for
ester of the United States forest ser
vice, r find a willingness here to
co-operate with the state of Oregcn
in every way possible to prevent the
disastrous fires which annually de
stroy so much wealth in our state.
There appeared to be a question in
the mind of the secretary of agri
culture whether the Weeks law was
not Intended to apply primarily to
those states in which the government
Is not already spending constderanie
sums in the protection of the forests
on mountain slopes, and he requested
the forester to discuss this matter
with me further personally. I am
now glad to Inform you that the as
sociate forester authorizes you, un
der the federal allotment of $5,000
for Oregon, to employ at once as
many federal patrolmen within this
amount and at the same salary paid
to guards on the national forests as
seem necessary In your judgment to
properly handle the fire situation. In
case of a great emergency he states
an additional allotment can be made
you.
With best wishes, I am, ,'
Truly yours,
