Mrs. Charles Crow and baby, who have been visiting with Mrs. Crow's sisters, Mrs. Amos Smith and Mrs. F. D. Eisniann, returned Wednesday to their home at Merlin. The latter gentleman is looking for a suitable location for a stationery and book department and may decide to locate in Grants Pass. Mrs. H. O. Hoard, who has spent the past two months visiting with hor parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Wert?, started this morning on her return 10 her home at Tyler, Tex. Mrs. Hoa-d will visit with her brother, Elmer Wertz, at Ogden, Utah, and will also visit relatives at Denver and Kansas City. Mr.. and Mrs. McQueen arrived la this city Wednesday from Sheridan to locate permanently here. Mr. anj Mrs. McQueen are old-time friends of Mr. and Mrs. R. Mundt and will be guests at their home until they be come permanently settled here. Judge Stephen Jewell, when asked this afternoon by The Courier if the county would pay the bill replied that he had not been Informed that depu ties had been appointed, and added that the county would not pay the salaries If possible to legally avoid it. Judge Jewell stated that the sheriff was allowed one deputy In the coun ty, and added that he would look up the law on the question raised by the appointments, but that the county would pay nothing If not compelled to. It is supposed that the company will foot the bills. CHICAGO, Aug. 24. General Man ager Kruttschnltt of the Harrlman lines this afternoon definitely refused to recognize the union "system federj atlon" plan, declaring the proposition entirely too radical. Kruttschnitt's statement followed a prolonged conference with Kline. Wendling, president of the Weed Lumber company, the Cal ifornia Pino Box and Lumber com pany of Grauts Pass, and 55 other lumber concerns, spent Sunday here with Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Dunbar, It was Wendling who built the railroad from Weed aorth, later taken over by the Southern Pacific and It was Wendling who recently forced the Southern Pacific to take up the work of building the line from Eugene to the sea, as Wendling told Southern Pacific officials to build it or he would. Mr. Wendling owns a vast area of timber in that region and wanted a railroad built to handle his timber. Now if he Just owned timber be tween Grants Pass and Crescent City, there would be a railroad under op eration or building between the two towns.
