PLANS MADE TO MARK LONG PACIFIC HIGHWAY Undoubtedly the most tangible re suit of the recent convention of the Pacific Highway association held In Portland was the pledging of friends to mark the Pacific highway from the Columbia river to the California border. The offer to do this work came from M. C. Dickinson, former president of the Portland Automobile club and one of the first friends of the Pacific highway. When the route of the Pacific highway is marked across Oregon the signs will guide the automobile tour ists who travel up the coast from the California line through Oregon, Washington Into Vancouver, B. C. The type of sign used ln all cases Is uniform and the only exception Is the fact that the different signs ln the various states carry the emblem of the club responsible for their erec tlon and maintenance. The signs through Oregon will carry the crest of the Portland Automobile club while those In Washington are mark ed with the emblem of the Automo bile club of Seattle. The route of the Pacific highway through Oregon from Salem to Port land Is soon to be improved ln a first class manner as Governor Os wald West has agreed to Immediate ly put one hundred and eighty con victs to work on this road. This sec tion of the Pacific highway will be known, locally, as the Capitol high way connecting the metropolis of Oregon with the capltol city. . Representation at the annual con vention of the Pacific Highway asso ciation covered British Columbia, Washington and Oregon. Delegates from California were not present. The enthusiasm displayed by their north ern neighbors aroused the people of Oregon to the realization that a great deal had to be done If the Pneifie highway was to be completed In time for the opening of the Panama Pa cific exposition In 1915. There Is no question but what the people of the web-foot state will put their shoulders to the wheel for next year and It Unexpected that an Immense amount of progress will bo seen In the Pacific highway through western Oregon.
