D. DRAKE. ENDEAVORERS AND ELKS , FILL ATLANTIC CITY The following is a prophesy made by W. J. Wimer in 1906 and is about to be fulfilled, Waldo, Oregon, December 28, 1906. Editor Courier: la your Issue of December 21, discussing $e dairy and fine stock meeting at Kerhy, car ried away by your enthusiasm for these industries, you said: "In the pioneer days, Illinois valley was not ed for its rich gold mines, and fa mous Sailor Diggings and Sucker creek and Althouse being among the richest mines on thU coast. The placers becoming largely worked out the population decreased, etc." It was not the exhausted pincers that depleted our population; it was min ing excitement in the north and the building later on of tne Portland San Francisco railroad across the eastern end of the county; the first canoed a rush of miners, some of whom have told thevwrlter that they left better diggings than they found in the new Eldorado; tin last were attracted by the railroad and they had no money with which to open up mines. The only feature of mining in this section, which has received its quietus Is the shallow plik and shovel diggings with cheap water. The bulk of all the gold deposited in our gravels by nature is here yet, and in the near future with modern machinery for saving fine values, In cluding platinum, corroded and float gold, we are to have a mining era in western Josephine compared to which the past will bo as a nlckle to a dollar. The1 placer miners here are losing at least 80 per cent of all their val : ues; they do not know It, beeaise they cannot actually see It going on and, therefore, they will not believe it. They see a plant Installed at Gallce creek which saves as much in tion, will be worked profitably and those now paying undar such waste ful methods will be bonanzas within themselves and all the dumps and old piles of tailings will pay to work over again: We are losing our corroded and float gold and nearly all of our plat inum values. Mr. Sanders, the builder of the Gallce creek black sand plant, says our mines carry gold in seven different varieties and platinum in five varieties. He says the kind of platinum cf which we lose the most Is "plat'uum in com bination with titanic iron, and chrome iron generally called black sand." The Deep Gravel Mlnlug company Is In receipt of a letter from David T. Day, Washington. D. C, dated October 18, UOR, as fol lows, to-wlt: "The weight of your sample was 385 grams, which represent, as we understand It, about one cubic yard. We find it to assay 10 cents per cu bic yard In gold and 15 teats per cu bic yard In platinum and t i e plat inum metals, computlas theso me tals at $34 per ounce, which la the present market price of p'atlnum." This ton of gravel wai dug from the solid bank by Professors J. T. Kemp and Gale expressly for the tests at the Lewis and Clark fair In June, 1905, and was taken from the high rim of the channel where the pay gravel was thin and the wash very fine, it, therefore, carried less values than the deeper and richer deposit below it. This cc-taln piece of ground from the poorest of which this sample was taken, haa yielded $48,000 in gold. Now, then, if Dr. Day is right. $72,000 or more was lost in mining the ground, for there was no corroded or float gold saved and but little platinum metal. If by improved machinery the out put of the mines can lu doubled without materially Increasing the ex pense, It necessary follow, that the ATLANTIC CtTY, N. J., July 11. Fifty thousand good fellows yelling "Hello Bill," and ca'rylng banners have started In to "wake up" the town. They are delegates to the con vention of Elks held here. Equal In numbers, If not In noise, Is the International Christian Endeavor congress, also meeting here. TheBe two gatherings make a total of 100, 000 people, the largest number of visitors ever entertained at one time In this city. NOTICE FOR PUBLICATION.
