THE GOOD ROAD PROBLEM FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1011. not be In the race for goods roads. Now we should get to work at once If we Intend to complete anything make a start and others will follow we should have an automobile boulevard the full length of the state and one that we would be proud of and every traveler would praise it will bring money by the thou sands Into the county from all parts of the world. I hope I have not tired or offended anybody who reads this. In my next l win iry to have some plan where we can get money to build good roads. J. C. DAVIS. p M Tlnnd and Game Warden S. That Grants Pass Is advancing along all lines goes without saying, and one of the evidences of growth in the mercantile life of the city Is seen In the metropolitan window dis plays of all our merchants, such as would do credit to any city. This week with the "White Sale" going on at the Golden Rule, O. C. Helnze, in charge of the dry goods depart ment of that establishment, has a display which is both Ingenious and attractive In its make-up. Mr. Helnze has put time and skill into his work. These things all tend to give the city the right sort of tone nnd are signs of advancement and prosperity of Grants Pass, the city rather than tho country town. Now the spring of the year is at hand, the people of Josephine county had better get together and promul gate some way to raise money to build roads from Grants Pass into the country. It is a shame that we should have such wagon roads as we have here. There is not a farmer in the county but would be benefited by having good macadamized roads their land would increase in value one hundred per cent. I say bond the county or bond the state, or if you cannot get enough money bond any and everything but get roads needs more than railroads or irriga tlon. I say it is a shame to see a pair of good horses plodding through the mud with one tier of wood making a heavier load to draw than three tiers would be if you had good roads, and not wear out man and beast. Friends the time has come when we cannot say that our roads are good enough as we have got along with them this long we can get along a little while longer. What was good enough 50 years ago is not good enough today why. should we sit Idle and let our sister states, Califor nia and Ohio lead in good roads and thoroughfares. California alone has spent millions of dollars on good roads, and last November at the gen eral election voted five to one to bond the state for $18,000,000 to make good roads and to build a boulevard from the Oregon line to the Mexico line a road that will be the pride of the world. Ohio has some of the finest macadamized roads In the United States all built by the peo ple of the state. Why should not Oregon do the same? Good roads bring settlers by the hundreds, and that is what Josephine county wants and should have. Now is the time to be up and doing and be the first county In the state. You can readily see the need of good roads when you look at Cth street, i and the side streets In Grants Pass and remember what it was a year ago and what you have today. It needs no argument to convince you all that we must be up and doing or we will You are probably aware that pneu monia always results from a cold, but you never heard of a cold resulting in pneumonia when Chamberlain's Cough Remedy was used.
