Mr. and Mrs. Amos Smith hns pur
chased 23 acres of the old Hayes
Hrothers ranch nenr Murphy, about
six miles from thin city. The place
contains fine, rich soil and Is all un
der Irrigation. The land has been
planted to wheat and alfalfa. Mr.
and Mrs. Smith export to spend tho
summer on their new property, where
they will have a new bungalow rrect-
ed early In the spring. The price
mild for the land was $3750.
Hereafter, during the fiscal year
ending June 30, 1911, unless other
wise ordered, and V thereafter, pro
vided congress shall make the neces
sary appropriation or authorize the
payment thereof, the department of
agriculture will pay the following
rewards:

First. Not exceeding $250, and
not less than $50, for Information
leading to the arrest and conviction
of any person, In any United States
court, on the charge of wilfully and
maliciously setting on fire, or caus
ing to be set on fire, any timber, un
derbrush or grass upon the lands of
the United States within a national
forest.
Second. Not exceeding $100, and
not less than $25, for information
leading to the arrest and conviction
of any person, in any United States
court, on the charge of building a
fire on lands of the United States
within a national forest, In or near
any forest timber or other Inflam
mable material, and leaving said fire
before the same has been totally ex
tinguished. Third. All officers and employees
of the deparment of agriculture are
barred from receiving reward for in
formation leading to the arrest and
conviction of any person or persons
committing either of the above of
fenses.
Fourth. The department of agri
culture reserves the right to refuse
payment of any claim for reward
when. In Its opinion, there has been
collusion or improper methods have
been used to Becure the arrest and
conviction thereunder, and to allow
only one reward where several per
sons have been convicted of the same
offense or where one person has been
convicted of several offenses, unless
the circumstances entitle the claim
ant to a reward on each such con
viction. These rewards will be paid to the
person or persons giving the Informa
tion leading to such arrests and con
victions upon presentation to the de
partment of agriculture of satis
factory documentary evidence there
of, subject to the necessary appro
priation, as aforesaid, or otherwise,
as may be provided by law.
Applications for reward, made In
pursuance of this notice, should be
forwarded to the Forester, Wash
ington, D. C; but a claim will not be
entertained unless presented within
three months from the date of con
viction of an offender,

Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Norton, of Tilla
mook, parents of Mrs. R. L. Demaree,
of thta city, arrived here Friday even
ing from an extended trip In the
southern states, having been absent
from their home for about two
months. They will visit here for sev
eral days with Mr. and Mrs. R. L.
Demaree and with Mr. Norton's
brother, Seldon Norton, and family
of this city. Mr. and Mrs. Norton
have visited with relatives and
friends at their old home In New
Iberia, La., at Los Angeles and other
points In California. They report a
most pleasant vacation, but are glad
to return to their Oregon home.

ford Saturday to spend several days
with relatives and friends In Grants
