and re-fiirnlshinK of their bank
ln rooms, putting in entirely new
fixtures. The contemplated improve
ments will give the hank an equip

In Southern Oregon, and the rooms
themselves will present an appear

to he found anywhere. A contract
has been made with the Rank Equip
ment Company of San Francisco to
do the work In the very best modern
style, which includes fixtures and
decorations.
The bank people have also made
a contract with the American Bank
Protection Company of Minnesota to
put In their complete electric, steel
burglar alarm system In conectlon
U - ith the hanking rooms and vault.
Tins system denes ourgiars in every
way. The vault can not be touched
;it nnv point from the bottom, sides
or top without setting the alarm go
ing which will arouse the neighbor
hood and the town. Should the
vault door be left open by accident

10 o'clock p. m. by the alarm sound
ing, ns the hour mentioned Is a regu
lar period to give warning in case of
neglect on the part of any person
whose duty it may be to close the
vault.
President Herrlck has In the past
years had occasion to fit no two
banks with this electric burglar sys
tem and knows from experience that
It gives ample protection to the funds
of the bank and therefore It is no ex
periment In this case. The patrons
of the bank , will be 'glad to know
that this Institution Is to be modern
ized and safe guarded. The Improve
ment contemplated will reflect credit
not only on the bank management
but on the city of Grants Pass.

. The Rogue River Hardware grain
ing contest which has been on for a
few weeks past has shown many how
easy It is to do excellent graining

one was welcome to enter the contest

many, both old and young, and any
one could express their opinion by
ballot as to their choice of artists,
the one receiving the highest num
ber of votes being declared the win

prize, one quart of Chi-Namel, Henry
Hlller, No. 24; third prize, one pint

Children's 'Day at Xewnuin Church.
The Children's Day exercises held
at the Newman M. E. church on Sun
day evening were among the finest
ever held in the city and a large
crowd was present to witness the ex
cellent work of the young people.
Besides the main part of the church,
the class rooms had to be thrown
open to accommodate the crowd
which had assembled. The church
building was beautifully decorated
In pink, white and green. Back of
the altar was a solid bank of ever
greens in which the words "Chil
dren's Day" done In white roses stood
out beautifully on the dark back
ground, while the corners were fill
ed In with clusters of pink roses and
green vines and pink and white roses
were Interspersed In pleasing array
throughout the pulpit and choir, the
whole presenting a beautiful and
artistic appearance. The entertain
ment consisted of recitations, singing
and dialogues by the little ones, and
a five-piece orchestra rendered sweet
music throughout the evening. Al
together the entertainment was one
of the very best, that has ever been
given In the church and everyone
attending Is loud In his praise of the
evening's program. Special credit Is
due Mrs. Ora Hood and her assistants
who had charge of the exercises and
worked so faithfully In making them
the complete success they were.

"Close Itogue Hiver" Is the Cry.
There Is a conspiracy on hand to
close I he Rogue rler to commercial
fishing and certain people in Jack
son county are the conspirator). Lis

,Hill News:
"It is nothing short of criminal to
allow one of the best trout and Bal
mon streams In the world to be ex
ploited to its ruination by commercial
fishermen. The upper waters of
Rogue river are even now almost un
inhabited by the gamey Chinook sal
mon and the steelhead trout, and un
less something Is done, and quickly,
the stream may be permanently de
prived of its famous finny popula
tion. "Not only lovers of aHgling, and
those who take pride In the Rogue's
reputation, hut every business man
of Southern Oregon should be In
tensely Interested In seeing the river
closed to commercial fishing. It Is
not alone a matter of sentiment, but
of business also.

town generally, should subscribe to
