A tree on the old Campbell place
In this city contained ripe cherries
on the first of May. This Is unusual
ly eariy for fruit to ripen, even In
Southern Oregon, and Is another
prooi of our superior climate for
fruit raising. The Courier this
week received a box containing sev
eral ripe cherries picked from a tree
growing on the farm of M. Burkhart,
of Woodvllle. me first ripe cherries
were picked from this tree May 8,
being a close second to our own
town.
Every available room In Grants
Pass seems to be occupied and it Is
very difficult for a stranger to se
cure any place to live. Last week
we heard of one party who spent
nearly two days In an endeavor to
secure a room and they were finally
taken Into a private residence for a
week until another room they had In
sight should be vacated. The prices
for rooms have a wide range, from
$1 to $10 per week. Parties who
have rooms to rent would do well to
advertise the fact.
A somewhat unusual and Interest
ing sight met the attention of the
passersby on West D street Saturday
afternoon. A Bwarm of bees from
somewhere had settled on an apple
tree, and whllo several admirers
were planning at a Bnfe distance
their capture and possession, Hugh
Elliott happened along. Taking In
the situation at a glance, he procured
a smnll grocery box and with a pock
et knife quickly severed the limb,
lowered It to the ground and plac
ing the box securely over the bees
left them until aided by the kindly
shades of evening and a Btrong
blanket they were safely conveyed
to the young man's home.
