The Light Question Tue bell has sounded the knell of kerosene, gasoline lights and . other forms of incompetent illumination. Are you ready to quit them? Haven't you tolerated them long enough? There was a time when burning pitch faggots furnished the only means of artificial illumination folks knew about. And It was considered sufficient. Then came the tallow dip, and everybody discarded his pitch faggot In disgust. The tallow candle was next to ex ert its supremacy over the tallow dip, and folks .were glad. The next step of development was kerosene lamps, and they in their turn were welcomed as a pleasing step In the right direction. Then came the gasoline lights, which Jacksonville tried and cast into the Junk pile several years ago. And now, as a logical development of science, we have the greatest of all illuminants electricity. Maybe some day something will replace electricity. But the probability isn't strong enough to Jusitfy us in waiting for It. No other form of artificial illum- inant equals electricity in brilliancy, safety, neatness, healthfulness, econ omy and cheerfulness. Electric lighting omits no fumes or odors, and is the one'hygenic light for living rooms and bed rooms. The fact that electric light con sumes no oxygen, like all open flame lights do, proves it to be the health iest light known. It keeps the air as pure and whole some as if no light were burning at all. The importance of this one feature is readily apparent when it is known that an open flame light burns more oxygen, from a room, than four per sons would breathe. No matches. No dangerous, dirty matches are needed in the home that Is electrically lighted. No washing and filling of lamps, no danger of explosions; no danger of leaks; no plumbers bills; no flick ering flame to be blown out by a sud den gust of wind; no fine smudge of soot continually emanating from your light to be deposited on cur tains, draperies, and furnishings. About a year ago the band was organized and practiced for consider able time, but made but few public appearances, and during the summer months it did but little work and many changes in members, so that this fall it was in bad shape, but a few weeks ago a reorganization and election of new officers was held, the services of Mr. Horn, of Sucker Creek, being secured. The way he straightened out the rough places was not slow and on the above date the band was prepared to furnish first-class music at the entertain ment. . While no special mention can be made of any of the boys, I can sure ly say that they all did nobly and were always ready with an encore, which was in every case called for, showing the audience was well pleased. While praising the band we must also call to mind the work of the or chestra, composed of Mr. and Mrs. Sidler, violin and organ, and Messrs. Horn and Clark, cornets. Although they had little time for practice, they certainly furnished some of the best dance music this side of Grants Pass. The evening's entertainment was opened by a few selections by the band, after which the boxes were sold, "netting the boys about $75; boxes running as high as $9. The boxes were sold by Rev. Shoe make, and the music was conducted by Instructor Horn, both doing their part very creditably. This was the first appearance of the new band and we can see nothing but success ahead. The Rogue River Orchard com pany, with headquarters at Merlin, has a gang of men and a donkey en gine at work clearing land of stumps and brush. Since commencing 30 acres have been cleared and every day additional acres are being added. It is the Intention to get 400 acres ready for spring planting of various kinds of fruit trees, but the work will not stop at that; the intention, being to keep on until the whole of the 3040 acres purchased will be in con dition to plant. A considerable por tion of this land will be devoted to grape growing and to this end the company will this year buy cuttings in carload lots and set out in nurs ery rows to put into vineyards next year. The Rogue River Orchard com pany is prepared to do fruit planting on a large scale and carry out the details in the way of cultivation, pruning, spraying and all other things needed in the work which has been undertaken by the com pany. Superintendent Eismann has just contracted for the fruit trees to plant the 400 acres mentioned above and the stock will reach Mer lin by the time It Is needed for plant ing. The company has an office at Kansas City also one at Portland and still another will be maintained at Grants Pass, with operating office and headquarters at Merlin. A dispatch from Gresham, this state, says: Two government inspectors made tuberculin tests upon the dairy herd belonging to B. P. Reynolds, during the fore part of last week, and con demned almost the entire herd. Of 114 cows but seven were found to be free from tuberculosis. The other 107 were driven to the slaughter houses at Troutdale yesterday and will bo converted into fertilizers. Mr. Reynolds will get about $10 apiece for them for that purpose. For many years Mr. Reynolds has been the lending Independent dairy man of Eastern Multnomah and hns furnished his customers in Portland with a wholesome grade of milk and butter. He at once discharged all his men and Is out of business for the present. He has not announced his future plans. Fifteen horses have been stolen in and around Vale during the last two months. Sheriff Odell has been quietly at work trying to locate the offenders, and as a result Pete Hoops and George Blanton are in custody charged with the theft, and most all of the horses have been located.
