IT SAVES MONEY.
The attempt of those who claim
that prohibition docs not prohibit Is
called to the following report taken
from the official sources of the
United States government:
"The Federal Treasury suffered a
shrinkage because of the prohibition
wave dining the fiscal year ending
June 30 last. During this lime
there was a decrease of $.1,200,773
Jn whisky tax as shown by the Inter
nal revenue report. Whisky tax col
lections last year were $ 1 34.RCS.
034, as against $140,158,807 for the
preceding year. The receipts of
beer and other fermented liquors
amounted to $57,456,413, a decrease
of $2,351,205 compared with 1D0S."
If those who are in search of In
formation on this subject will add
to the nbove sum saved to the people
on the whiskey tax the cost of the
prosecutions of crimes committed by
men through whisky it will amount
to many thousands of dollars In
very county In each of the states
and It is quite safe to say that the
money thus saved would amount to
more than a hundred millions an
nually. This looks like n large sum
but It is certainly n conservative es
timate. Wo admit that revenue can he se
cured for the city by licensing cer
tain men to put liquid hell Into the
months of fathers of families and
young men to steal nway their
brains, but Iho policy Is bad In the
extreme, and besides It costs more
than It conies lo, to say nothing of
the homes that are wrecked, the
lives that are blasted, and the wo
men nd children that go hungry. A
man may do thnt which will aid the
monster of Intemperance, but woe
unto such a man.

A surprise party was held at the
Smith Cook home on Fifth street on
j Monday evening, the object being to
surprise the whole family, Ralph
I Dean Included, and the young people
I were rewarded by a complete suc
cess. Everyone was surprised and
everyone had a Jolly good time.

j features of entertainment and re
j frcshments of cake and cocoa were
served. : At about 12 o'clock the
'crowd departed for home, busily

'surprise parties are getting to be the
fashion, and It will be surprising If
everyone of the bunch are not sur

Last Saturday was the 5f,th birth
day anniversary of A. H. Mock and j
a few friends gathered at his home
on West I street to help him cele
brate the event In a fitting manner.
The party was In the form of a sur-
j prise and the evening was very pleas
inntly passed with prunes and music,
i Refreshments of rake, lemonade and
fruits were served and the guests re-'
malned until a late hour, wishing
Mr. Mock many happy birthdays In ;
the years to come. Those present

A dancing party was given at the
guild hall on Wednesday evening In
honor of Miss Eula Howard at which
there was a largo attendance of in
vited guests and n very enjoyable
time was spent. Delicious punch was
served to the dancers during the
evening. One of the most enjoyable
features of the dance was the excel
lent music furnished by the Dean
orchestra of four pieces. The orches
tra Is made up of Messrs. Ralph
Dean, violin, W. J. Mahoney, cornet,
Louis Steelhammer, clarinet, and
Miss Eva Wlmer, piano accompanist,
and they furnish a high grade of
music hard to beat for dance or
concert. Not until the last strains
of the "Home. Sweet Home" sounded
through the hall did the merry
makers disperse for (heir homes, de
lighted with the pleasant evening
pastime.

young people were soon busily en
