Tariff No Longer Political Issue.
The New York Evening Mall sums
up the tariff in a terse and yet In a
comprehensive manner, as follow:
The country has accepted the pro
jectionist principle more completely
than at any previous period of our
rational history No headway has
been made by those who have spora
dically attempted to revive the old
free-trade or tarlff-for-evenue-only
feeling- It was made sufficiently
rlear at the extra session that the
I south has become at heart protec-
luionlst. Senator Daniels of Virginia
f openly repudiated the platform of
II his party, and instead of being pun
y inlii-d has been rewarded by a unani-
moils r'enominatlon. On critical roll
calls more than half of the Southern
senators voted for higher duties, and
there is no evidence that their con
duct is unsatisfactory to their con
stituents. "With free-tradlsm lan
guishing In the North and protection
sentiment growing In the South, pro
tectionism seems unassailable.' It is
true that In certain states of the
Mississippi valley there Is an appar
ent drift toward lowering the tariff,
but with the East, the South, the
Mountain states; and the Pacific
Coast against them, it is difficult to
see bow their propaganda, even if

"It is clear that the tariff problem
Is no longer the principal political
preoccupation of the American peo
ple. There is an unusual amount of
Indifference as to whether duties are
to be high or low. The campaigners
on both sides discovered this during
this summer's agitation. No excite
ment could be worked up by either
side. Business men and manufac
turers refused to become excited
when told that they were about to
hecome ruined; consumers remained
calm when it was advertised to them
that if they did not vigorously pro
test they would be robbed. This
quiescence is largely traceable to the
fact that attention Is now concen
trated on questions which but in
directly Involve the tariff on social
problems having to do more with the
equitable distribution of wealth than
the conditions of its production. A
hundred heads are piirllug over
what is to be done with respect to the
corporations and the combinations to
one (levoling Itself to pondering over
customs duties. The American peo
ple are so constituted that they can
think of but one thing at a time, and
the rise of the new Issue has dis
placed tli e old."

Portland Letter,
rvaiLAKu, Or., Aug. 11 . Gov
ernor Shallenberger, of Nebraska,
with his staff, will visit the Pacific
Northwest this month and will be
the guest of Portland on August 21
and 22. While In the city he and his
party will be entertained by the Port
land Commercial Club and every
possible courtesy will be shown the
visitors. The party will make stops
at other coast points, including a
stay of five days at the Seattle ex
position. The trip is made for. the
purpose of getting better acquainted
with the coast and coming into
closer touch with Its people.
Extensive plans are now bein"
made for the reception and enter
tainment of the Japanese excursion
ists who will visit the Northwest
during the early part of September.
The party is expected to spend two
clays in Portland and they will be
extensively entertuined while here.
A reception committee has been
named by the Portand commercial
bodies that will take charge of the
representatives of the land of Nippon
and see that nothing is overlooked in
making them welcome. The visitors
are very prominent in the commer
cial life of Japan and hope to brinn
about, closer industrial relations be
tween the two countries.
A famous Oregon pioneer, Dr.
John McLaughlin, will be remember
ed on September 5 at Oregon City,
when his old house, now restored and
moved to a public park, will be de
dicated. This grand old man of
Oregon, who did so much for the
early settlers of this state and made
personal sacrifices to assist others,
is at last to have public honor paid
him for his work. September 3 is
the date of his death and on the fol
lowing Sunday a memorial service
In his honor will be held, and the
old dwelling, where he lived for
many years, dedicated as a memorial
of his kindly life. The services prom
ise to be largely attended.
Many prominent Oregonians are
In attendance at the National Irri
gation Congress at Spokane this
week. Governor Benson and the
commercial bodies of the state have
appointed a large number of dele
gates who are interested hi further
ing irrigation work in the Wesl.
Many left the first of the week to at
tend the sessions of the congress.
Soundings made by the officials of
the Port of Portland during the pas!
veek show that the Columbia river
from the mouth of the Willamette
to the ooean is in better shape for
navigation by deep vessels than has
been the case for some time.
