Margaret Ann Dean (nee Dyer),
a Bister of Mrs. Geo. W. Colvlg, of
Grants Pans, wus born in Piatt coun
ty, Missouri, July 19, 1842, being
the eldest of a family of 13 children,
one of whom died In Infancy. She
whh married to M. Dean on February
3, 1859, and crossed the plains with
ber husband In 1865. They settled
aear Riddle, Oregon, In 1866. She
Joined the M. E. church, South, In
1869, and lived a faithful member
and consistent Christian until her
death on March 17, 1909, leaving
testimony to her readiness and will
ingness to go to the "mansions pre
pared for her from the foundations
of the world."
Threo children preceded her to the
better land, but she leaves here her
husband, five children and 11 bro
thers and sisters for yet a little
time to wait, while anticipating the
family re-union, where there will be
no more parting.
Hpray Plant for lUmeburg.
Manager II. C. Sampson, of the
Grants Pass caunery was In Rose
burg last week and made another
trip Friday. Ho has leased a build
ing and will Install a plant for the
manufacture of Sampson's spray for
that Talley. The Umpqua valley has
been a heavy usor of spray, but the
freight ratos make It Impossible to
uccesHfully compete with the north
ern manufacturers. The plant at
Rosoburg will be operated in con
nection with the Grants Pass plant
and Hhould the branch become over

From present Indications Grants
Tass, It would seem, has not seen
the I ant of the Home Telephone
agitation, Med ford having voted on
the proposition and carried It by
over two or three to one. We are
now Informed that the question will
foine up without delay In this city
and the frletuW of the measure claim
that It will carry here by as large
majority as It did In Medford. The
Courier has not made an Investiga
tion of the subject and therefore Is
unable to glvo an opinion as to
whether It would or would not carry
If submitted to a vote of the people.
Mrs. UHVld Scott arrived from
Goldfleld, Nev., on Friday of last
week on a protracted visit to her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. E. McKoln,
of this city. It Is to bo hoped that
Mrs. Scott and her husband will

The 1'nlted States Civil Service
Commission announces that Clerk
Carrier examination will be held at
Grants Pass, Oregon, on April 19,
1909. The PoHt Office Department
proposes to establish city free de
livery on June 15, 1909, with two
carriers nnd one substitute. These
positions will be filled by selection
from the eligible register to he es
tablished from the examination to
be held as well as any clerical va
cancies that may occur during the
coming year. Age limit, IS to 4,"
years. Applicants should at once ap
ply to the Postmaster for applica
tion and pamphlet of instructions.
Applications must be filed with the
Secretary of the Twelfth Civil Ser
vice District. San Francisco, Cal.
The subject of having wrapping
paper for fruit printed at an ex
pense of three-fourths of a cent
came up and on motion It was de
cided to use the printed paper.
It was ordered that suitable litho
graph labels for' the ends of fruit
boxes be procured.
On motion It was ordered that
Prof O'Gara be Invited to address
a meeting of the Fruit Exchange In
about two weeks from that date.
The following resolutions were
offered and adopted:
Whereas, we learn with regret
that certain parties, mostly smnll
boys, are buying diseased, deformed
nnd scaly fruit and selling the same
to passengers on the train, and
Whereas, such practice with Its
dire results are directly harmful
and a terrible menace to the fruit
Interests and a misrepresentation of
the greatest Industry of the valley,
etc.
Whereas, a few persons thus em
ployed ran at such a place undo
more than all the advertising can
effect.
Now, therefore, be It resolved;
that we condemn In strongest terms
the practice of selling such diseased
fruit upon the trains, and resolved
that we request our growers of fruit
not to sell cull apples to persons who
thus wrongfully dispose of them
upon the train, and, third, bo It further

Fruit Kchange Meeting,
The Fruit Kxchango held a meet
ing on Tuesday morning at the Com
mercial Club room and discussed
many subjects of Interest to fruit
growers. Manager Seovllte occupied
the chair and In the absence of Sec
rotary Thomas. 11. K. Rateham acted
as secretary.
The committee on getting new
members both to the Kxchango and
to the Commercial Club, made a re
port which was adopted and the
committee continued. A new straw
berry box was shown and orders for
the same wns taken by the manager.
The matter of contracting fruit to
the Kxchango was taken up nnd dls
cusrrd st considerable length with
out definite action.
