DID NOT SET DISAS
TROUS FOREST FIRE
L. K. Webb Writes to Complain of
an Article Published
in the Observer
A' letter has been received by the
Courier from L. K. Webb of this
county but temporarily staying in
San Franctsco. It will be remem
bered that he was charged with set
ting forest fires last fall or late In
the summer. On this charge he was
tried In the United States Court and
the government failed to convict and
a new trial has been ordered to take
place In San Francisco during the
March term. He now complains of
a certain article published in the Ob
server In relation to his case. The
letter Is of considerable length and
hardly suitable for the columns of
this paper. Mr. Webb feels that he
has been wronged and as far as a
denial is concerned, he has a right to
make it, but when he briags accusa
tions against other people, these col
umns are not for that purpose, and
yet in fairness we must apply the
old rule to Mr. Webb's case. "Every
man must be regarded as Innocent
until he is proven guilty."
Here Is the opening sentence of
the letter which Is dated at San
Francisco, February 3d:
"Editor Rogue River Courier: I
have this day received a copy of the
Observer, dated January 6th, 1909,
through the courtesy of a friend,
which contains an article wherein an
account of my trial for setting the
Klamath forest fire Is given and I
will state here with all truthfulness
that Bald article Is, both diabolical
and false In every feature; In fact,
not one word of truth does it con
tain." In the closing sentence of the let
ter he says: "I cannot boar to have
people who have been friends to me
believe me guilty of a crime which
I never committed. All testimony
against me was disregarded by the
Judge in his charge to the Jury. It
was a case of back firing with him,
nothing more. I did back fire."
(Signed L. K. Webb.)

Relieves Stomach Misery AlinoNt
Immediately.
If the food you ate at your last
meal did not digest, but laid for a
long time like lead on your stomach,
then you have indigestion and must
act quickly.
Of course there are many other
symptoms of Indigestion, such as
belching up of sour food, heartburn,
dizziness, shortness of breath and
If you have any of them, your stom
ach is out of order and should be
corrected.
Ml-o-nn tablets have cured thous
ands of cases of indigestion and
stomach trouble. If you have any
Btomach distress, Ml-o-na will relieve
Instantly.
But Ml-o-na unlike most so-called
dyspepsia remedies, does more than
relieve; It permanently cures dys
pepsia or any stomach trouble by
putting energy and strength Into the
walls of the stomach. A largo box of
Ml-o-na tablets costs but 50 cents at
Dcmaray's and are guaranteed to
cure or money back. When others
fall, Ml-o-na cures. It Is a producer
of flesh when the body Is thin; It
cleanses the stomach and boweU;
purifies the blood and makes rich red

GOOD
ADVICE
FRO
INSPECTOR
Timely Topics For Our
Fruit Growers.
READ AND REFLECT.
Attention to Everything 1b Time is
She Way to Become a Sao
cessful Orchardlst.
By II. C. Bateham.
This should be our very busy sea
son, and any man who has nothing
to do but wait for his crop is. un
worthy the name of fruit grower.
Begin by digging out all seedlings,
sprouts, decrepit trees and every
thing that will not produce fruit of
value; you thus save spraying that
much. Pruning should then be
rushed through as rapidly as possi
ble, beginning with grapes, first be
cause they whl bleed if done later.
It is a well known fact that the old
wood of berry bushes should be cut
out, but It Is also true of pruntng
roses, quinces and peaches. Remem
ber young wood Is where you get
your choice fruits and flowers. No
matter how hurried you may be take
the time to gather and burn your
brush before undertaking to spray
or cultivate. Besides It Is unlawful
to throw your brush over the fence
Into your neighbor's yard, or into
the road, but It must be burned
within 60 days; better make it
six days and the scale will not crawl
back from your brush into your trees
again. March 1st is about the time
limit for winter Bpraylng in this cli
mate, as the first warm days of
spring will start the young scale
Insects crawling, but it you should
ot get It done or cannot get a
sprayer before the first week In
March, don't get alarmed, Sampson's
ray will not hurt the trees or
flowers If they are half open if prop-
oily diluted. Several growers failed
to get good results from the spraying
last winter and the cause in moat
cases may be found in one of the
following characteristic replies:
"Ran Bhort of spray and filled out
with water." "Could not reach the
top of tree with the old pump." It
came on raining but we kept right
on working so as to get through."
Gentlemen, let's do things thor
oughly and we can then get rid of
the pestiferous scale. Come on,
we've got them on t he run already.
Thousands of peach trees are be
ing planted here this spring and
hundreds of these will die. WhyT
Because the owner will fall to cut
them back. All branches and half
the stem should bo cut off to Insure
a good start. One half of the new
growth of peach trees should be cut
off each year and In this way you not
only keep your trees In good shape
but will help them to bear fruit
which is very essential.
Every orchard and lot In Grants
Pass containing fruit trees has, I be
lieve, been Inspected. I trust that
no grower has been omitted. The
balnnce of the county will be exam
ined during the next few weeks.
The work of an Inspector Is for the
good of the whole community, and
any one having problems which he
cannot solve Is at liberty to call on
me for assistance that it may be
within my power to give. Phone
645.
We may look forward to two gath
erings of Importance in the near fu
ture. The fruit protective meectlng,
to be addressed by Prof. O'Oara,
some time In March, and a little lat
er the Southern Pacific will run a
complete demonstration train
through Rogue River Valley. Get
your work in shape ho as to take a
day off and enjoy these occasions.
