The accident which caused this
sad death was mentioned in the
last issue of the Courier. The fu
neral was held Sunday, and Inter
ment took place in Wlldervllle ceme
tery, Judge Stephen Jewell officiat
ing. The family have the sympathy
of the entire community in their sad
bereavement.

Colonial Jack, a character who
Is making more or less of a name
for himself by his walking stunts ar
rived in Grants Pass Thursday

miles and to win a wager he must
make the trip in 400 days. His
starting point was Portland, Maine
June 1, 1908 and he must be back
there by September 9, 1909. An
average of 22 1-2 miles per day will
get him there in time but he Is al
ready away ahead of his schedule.
He makes his expenses as be goes
by selling souvenirs. When he Is
through with the trip he expects to
write a book.
To provide against accidents be
fore starting out he took out an in
surance policy In the Modern Wood
men ot America. He was delayed
In. .Grants Pass over night as his
shoes needed repairing. Secre
tary Andrews interviewed him on
behalf of the town and said: "Co
lonial Jack" has walked all the way
from Portland, Maine, on the dou
ble trot to reach Grants Pass In time
to Join the Commercial Club while
the "200" 10,000 compaign Is on
at reduced rates.
The Halr-Rlddle Hdwe Co. is do

erous In thts section, and many of
the farmers are strongly in favor of

Pass decided not to hold a poultry j

minds that when the Association
again takes on life they will not be
found wanting.
The Lucus & Son Hardware, im

week sold to Hon. L. L. Jewell and
associates and the business will
hereafter be conducted under the
name of the Jewell Hardware Com
pany. Mr. Jewell will give his per
sonal attention to the conduct ot
the buslnes and has associated with
him Frank South. Mr. Jewell Is
known as a conscientious business
man and In his new venture has the
good will of his numerous friends.
He Is at home 'in the hardware
line as he was engaged in It before
he entered the Grants Pass Banking
and Trust Company as cashier.
The place will continue to be the
