SPOKANE APPLE SHOW
WILL BE LARGE AFFAIR
From a purely local affair, originat
ing la the Spokane County Hniticol-
t.irl Hticietv. tho anule show to be
no Id iu Spokane, December 7 to 13 liae
ln-come iuteruational in scope. Ad
vices were received the pant week
that Japan, England, Germany and
Norway will all have national din
lUys at the Spokane allow. Britich
Oolmubia and the other Canadian
provinces hav already reterved
space for approximately 200 exhibits,
and the indlollons are that they will
double this number. In all, the en
iries received np to the tirst of Novem
ber ayarepate flOO.
In view of the iutrreat taken in the
apple show bf foreign countries, the
board of truHtte have arrantied
Mecial fHtttort-s that will make the
event international in aipearaune if
uut in name, Iuvilations have been
tanned to all the foieigu representa
tives of foreign coontries at Washiug
tou, 1). C as well as to all foreign
Knveruments. Flags of nearly all
foreign countries have been secarrd
at d will be osed in decorating the im
tuense bnilding in which the show is
to be held. The secretary of the
treasury at Wellington, D. O. bas
been requested by Senator Piles, of
Washington state, to remove the duty
on exhibits sent from the Canadian
provinces, and it is likely this will
tie done. The selection of jodges for
the show has beeu left to the depart
tnttuts of agriculture of both the
t'uited States and Canada, so that
i-vety district represented might be
assured of fair treatment.
Manager JL J. Neely says: "If the
northwestern states are to make a
showing against other sections of the
world at the apple show, the growers
most get busy. I have just been ad
vised today by W. N. Hutt, state
horticulturist of North Carolina, that
bis state will require 6000 square feet
for her exhibits He now has an ex
lrt in the field selecting apples for
exhibit., and bas established a oold
storage plant at Raleigh to care for
them nntil shipped to Spokane. We
ars also notified that two carloads
have left western New York for , the
apple show, aiid that another carload
baa passed the Minuesota transfer at
St. Paul en route here. We are get
ting entries every day from British
Colombia.
"This means that the northern
western states will not have every
thing their own way, and in fact must
do some rat Id work if they are going
to oompete with the other sections of
the world. The apple crop is now
being harvested aud it will soon be
too late to get prise winning apples.'

Good Prospect Ahead.
The amount of clearing which will
be made this winter and next spring
in this part of Josephine county will
exceed that of any other year in the
past. Much new land will be set to
apples and pear trees and a still
larger acreage will be plauted to
grapes, mostly of the Tokay variety.
One of the most rnconraging things
iu this section is the ontting up of
large farms into 10 aud SO acre tracts
with view of making a speoialty
if growing small and large fruits.
This part of Josephine county should
double Its population doring tne year

proeptts ahead let ns all resolve to
ork together in harmony to upbuild
i he country. Nothing is to be gained
by "knocking" either your neighbor
or the oouutry.

Beauty of Grants Pass Forests.

Matare's artist has j luted the leaf

it Is not alouu in the wild forest these

On Saturday last the president is
sued the annual Thanksgiving proc
lamation, setting apart Thursday,
November 26, as "a day of thanks
giving and prayer."
"Year by year, " declares the proc
lamation, "this nation grows in
strength and worldly power. Dur
ing the century and a quarter that
bas elapsed since our entry into the
circle of independent people we have
grown and prospered in material
things to a degree never before
known, and net known in any other
country. The 13 colonies which strag
gled along the seacoast of the Atlantio
and were hemmed in but a few miles
west of tidewater by the Indian
haunted wilderness, have been trans
formed into the mightiest republio
which the world has ever Been. Its
domalus stretch across the continent
from one to the other of the greatest
oceans, and it exercises dominiou
alike in the Arctic and tropic realms.
The growth in wealth andpopnlation
bas surpassed even the growth in ter
ritory. Nowhere vise in the world is
the average of individual comfort and
material well-being as high as in
our fortunate laud.
"For the very reason thus abounded,
we owe to the Almighty to sho
equal progress in moral and iu spirit
ual things. With a nation, as with
the individuals who make up a na
tion, material well-being is an indis
pensible foundation. But the founda
tion avails uothing of ittelf. That
life is wasted and worse than wanted
which is spent in piling, heap on
heap, those things which minister
merely to the pleasure of the body
aud to the power that rests only on
wealth. Upon material well-being
as a foundation must be raised the
struoture of the lofty life of the spirit,
If this nation is properly to fulfill its
great mission and accomplish all we
so ardently hope and desire. Tbe
things of the body are good, the
things of the Intellect bet'er, but best
of all things of the soul, for in the
nation, as in the individual, in the
long run it is character that counts.
Let as, tbrefore as a people, set oar
faoes resolutely against evil and with
broad charity with friendliness and
good will toward all men, but with
unflinching determination to smite
down wrong strive with all the
strength that is given ns for righteous
ness in public and in private life.'

"Tour of the Tourist
REMARKABLE event in the history of automobiledom was the tour of
more than thirty Tourist cars from Los Angeles to San Francisco and return,
August 12th to 22d. 1908. carrvine 94 men. womm nrl rhildrfn.
This tour differs radically from any previous automobile run in that practically
every car was operated by its owner instead of a professional driver, thus demonstrating
simplicity and ease of operation, and proving forcibly that the Tourist is 'an owner's
car so simple in operation and mechanism as to enable the novice to negotiate the
severest test to which an automobile could be put.
This more-than-a-thousand-mile-run was successfully accomplished without mishap
or accident, and will live long in the annals of automobiledom as a glowing testimonial
to mechanical genius and constructional ability.
