    THE BEE AND HONEY
INDUSTRY IN OREGON
Although It ii not given m much
publicity as it deserves and not so
mnob as other branches of farming,
the bee and honey indastiy of Oregon
is quite a revenue producer. This
was demonstrated by H. Ahlers, of
Clatsop county, at the tecent Oregon
state fair who bad an interesting ex
bibit of the bogy workers and some of
the output of their hives. Mr.
Ablers is a bee enthusiast, and is of
the opinion that the fanners are stand
ing in Jtheir own light by tbeir ap
parent indifference to the matter of
keeping more colonies of the boney
producers. He has a small farm not
far from the mouth of the Columbia
river and a portion of its equipment
consists of 200 colonies of bees,
which averaged him over 50 pounds
of splendid boney per hive during last
year, and he expects a large product
during 1908. Iu parts of Washington
state bee keepers are making large
profits from their hives. One person
says the average yield per colony in
his yards is 100 pounds, and he has
two colonies which have produced
128 pounds each to .far this reason.
Where vetch and alfalfa and clover
can be grown luxuriaotly there also
will bees do well and tarn great quan
tities ot the nectar of these blooms
into an article that will find ready
sale at all seasons of the year.
In the vioinity ot Walla Walla the
beekeepers expect to harvest a total
honey output of 60 tons this year.
They have already begun to make
shipments to the large market cen
ters. Fifty tons of honey means the con
centrated labor of mlllious ot bees
and the watohfulness day after day of
hundreds of men and women during
the busy reason, when honey runs
high in the flowers of alfalfa and
otber flowering plants and fruit trees.
While honey has been made for the
season it is just ready for the market
Keepers of bees carry over from year
to year from 10 to 260 colonies each,
several of the large producers keeping
over 280 colonies each. Early iu the
spring and through the winter the
bees absorb considerable of tne stored
boney, and it is not until the first run
of houey has ended in the spring that
the bees lay np the marketable pro
duct. During the summer tons of
honey will be stored to be removed by
the keepers and prepared for market.
The little crates are placed ln the
hives and the bees promptly fill them.
Being removed, others are Riven the
places and thus the entire season is
passed, the honey being kept in cool
places until it is prepared for (ale.
The small crates are carefully
scraped, the wood brightened with
sandpaper and 24 of theai placed in
a box. These boxes are taken to the
wholesale houses and are soon on the
market.
At the apiary the prices of a box of
tiouey will range from 2 to 3.50, ac
cording to the color and the demand.
This season the color is unusually
clear and the price will range high.

OUTLOOK FOR OREGON
IMMIGRATION GOOD
Sentiment for Taft Everywhere
Cannon Cannot Be Re
elected Spee. ker.
o. n. Kings, returned this week
from an eastern trip of two months
daring which he visited Chicago and
otner large cities. He reports the out
look for many pernor. i coming to Ore
gon during the next year as good, as
the advertising campaign has made
the wonders of the climate, soil and
rruits known far and wide.
Mr. Riggg says that the
political
sentiment of the
country is for Taft.
oiraw votes are being taken everv
where. On the train on which he came
west a poll was takeu and 63 favored
Taft, 27 Bryan and eight were non
committal and this seems to be about
the way it stands in most places
rnroungout the country. He expressed it
as his opinion that so far as the labor
vote is concerned Qompeis is not
going tos wing any more votes than
usual for Bryan.
Since the republican party managers
nave oegun to liven things np by
seudning out speakers, the apathetic
feeling which was so notioeable during
tne summer and ealry fall, has entire
ly disappeared and the feeling
that Taft will be elected is every
wnere ana consequently business is
not suffering as badly as it might
though no by deals are being made
and the merchants ara not buying
any large .stocks ahead. While in St.
Paul be talked with au importer,
representing one of the largest firms
in the world iu the manufacture of
velvets and plushes in Germany and
this man said it was impossible to
place orders for that class or goods
until after the election is over. The
substantial interests of the oonntry are
afraid of Bryan and that this is so was
impressed upon Mr. Riggs in many
ways. At one time he was in conver
sation with a prominent Pacific ooast
banker who was very bitter
against Roosevelt and sgalnst Taft,
but nevertheless he fransly stated that
he intended to vote for Taft because
be was afraid of the consequences
should Bryan be elected and the in
terests of the country demanded that
he be defeated.
Speaking of the fight being waged
against speaker Cannon, Mr. Riggs
said he was in "Uncle Joe's" borne
town of Danville aud from what he
saw and heard there aud elsewhere,
thronghout the state, be is satisfied
that Cannon will be returned to con
gress, tie lias s cored au appropria
tion for new buildings of f2?5,000 and
they want from 1500,000 to $800,000
more to complete them. They knew
that to send a new man
means that they must
years befote be will be
to congress
wait many
able to ac-
coniplish a great deal, while Cannon.
by reason of his long service is able
to get pretty neatly whatever be goes
after. Home pride will compel tin's
people to vote for bim. He is also
very popular with the old soldiers of
whom there are about 3000 iu the
home at La Salle and they are woik-
itig very hard for him.
'But," said Mr. Rigiis, "while
there is scarcely any doubt about Mr.
Cmnon being returned to congress,
there is doubt about his beiug again
idected to the speaki r'l chair, as the
sentiment g-uerailv is ugaiDst bin
