A con pie of branches cut from the
trees in the orchard of the Meals Bros,
was brought iulo the Courier office
this week which would convince any
one even from the "show me" state
that the section around Grauta Pass is
admirably adoptel to fruit raising.
One was a piece cut from the end of a
iea' h branch and while uot over a
foot aud a halt loug held 35 luscious
jwaehes. The other was a shorter
branch from a plum tree and held 31
larne plums.
The Meals Bros. ' ranch is about 10
miles below Grants Pass at the river
lend. They have devoted very little
of th'dr time to fruit raising, having
beeu engiged prluci pally in uvning,
but some years ago set out about 30
peach 15 apple, aud half a dozen
plants. These have borne such an
ahanduuee of frtrt that they have de
termined to pat in a 15 acre orchard.

A Mago.rine Evening.
At the home of Rev. and Mrs.
Hollingworth on last Friday evening
the Young People of the Christian
church reproduced a fall number of
one of our magzinea. The frontis
piece was very nioely represented by
Miss Viotorine Pollock, dreased in
whit" with a sarland of maple leaves.
Followng this was a story from real
life, by Miss Vora Storrey. Mrs. Earl
V. Ennels gave a reading, which
wa hiably appreciated, Roscoe Brat
ten gave a very good paper entitled
"Favorite Recipes." Miss Mozelle
Hail also appeared on the prorgam.
In the Childrens corner little Miss
Jackson gave a reading whioh was
very much appeciated and little Miss
Calvert tang a beautiful solo.
In the advertising department Mr.
aud Mrs. E. W. Cowdrey gave an ex
cellent representation of the Pearline
advertisement which is running in the
magazines.
Another cleverly arranged repro
duction was the advertisement of the
records for the Victor Talking Ma
chine, "His Master's Voice. A large
picture of dog was set In front of the
graphaphone on which a batered
record was being played.
The Fashion Plate was very amus
ingly represented by the young folkes
dressed io an appropriate way.
Baker's Cocoa was realistically
represented by Miss Mable Trimble.
At the close of the magazine she
served the guests with cups of the
real article.
The entertainment was enjoyable
from start to finish and was one of the
pleasantest evenings of the season for
those In attendance.
The second advertising car -of
Buffalo Bills -Wild West show passed
through Tuesday attached to No. 15.
The open season for both the
Chinese and native pheasants and for
grouse began last Tuesday and since
that time the slaughter has been
going ou. Grouse plentiful and some
hunters have succeeded in bagging
quite a few pheasants. The dares for
the next biennial apple fair at Hood
River are October 14, 15, 16, and the
exhibit will be as extensive and at
tractive as usual.
