and scientists .at wort all summer
taking an inventory or the natural re
sooroes of the United State. In

thousand from all the government
offices at Washington, special agents
are In the field, to government sta
tions here and there, to township as
sessors, to manufacturers, to lumber
dealers, to railroad and steamboat
companies and to farmers. The chiefs
of the government bureaus have been
granting to know about lands farm
lauds, timber lands, mineral lands,
about crops and orop production;
abont swamp and overflow lands;
about irrigation; about navigation
how far the use of our inland water
ways has deoreased and the reason for
he decrease ; the cost of water traffic
as compared with railroad rates ; the
ose of water power and its possi
bilities ; about all phases of the forests
and lumber; about how much of
minerals we have left and the proba
ble duration of the mineral supply,
and about livestock and game aud
fish.
Tbe work taken np by Federal gov
ernment has aroused the interest of
the various states and state commis
sions m reporting to the national
conservation commission at the rate of
three or four a week aud large
national organizations are rapidly
oomiog forward with conservation
committees of their own. The con
servation movement may be said now
to be firmly established. All the
government bureaus are rapidly
pushing work on tbe inventory of
resources in order tbat a preliminary
report may be made to tbe national
conservation commission at its meet
ing in Washington, Tuesday, Decem
ber 1. One week later, Tuesday, De
cember 8, the governors of the states
and territories or their repesentatives
will meet in Washington with the com
mission. Already, although the in
vitation has not yet been issued, the
governors of some 13 or 15 states and
territories have announced their in
teution to be present at the meeting.
Among .these are 'Governor Frear cf
Hawaii and Governor Eoggatt of
Alaska.
The work of the National Conserva
tion Commission will be of incalcula
ble value and is the first step toward
making provisions for future genera
tions by taking care of the resources
of the country.
