day says that the - residence of A. J.
Fulk, proprietor of the Illinois Valley
Creamery, on Sucker Creek, was con
sumed ,by Are Tuaeday. Mr. Fulk
had just started for Grants Pass with

A contract for 125 cords of wood
was awarded to Prof. Turner at
ft. 90 per cord. The president of the
board was also authorized to buy four
new llaus. The enrollment in the
city schools is 100 greater thao at this
time last year and it may be neces
sary to repair the south building and
make it ready for use.

The base ball season formally
opeued In Grants Pass last 8unday
with a game between the local team
and the Jacksonvlle nine. The locals
were victorious by a score of 4 to 8.
The score is thoroughly indicative of
the fact that it waa an extraordinarily
good gams for an opener. The visitors
were the firs', to score, making one
run in the third inning while the
home nine drew nothing bett'rjthan
a gooe egg op to the fifth when they
decked the score sheet with oue scar.
Bat as will be seen by the score by
innings below, it was anybody's game
up to the last Jarvis went into the
box aud did excellent work op to the
sixth when his arm gave out and he
was relieved bv Phelps. Capt. Setzer
picked them off from behind the bat in
regulation style, and he expressed
himself as well pleased with the open
ing game.
Judgiug from the start off the boys
are looking for an uusuallv interest
ing ball season this year. Te Jack
sonville boys have a good team and ex
pect to play .out the season. The next
game will be between Grants Pass aud
Medford at Medford next Sunday.
It was originally planned to play this
game on the local diamond but the
plan was subsequently changed aod
the Grants Psas boys will go to Med
ford next Sunday morning and return
in the evening.
Bruoe Stephenson was the first to
make a 3-base bits for which be was
given bis choloe of the beat bats in

along the same was read and referred

The superintendent of streets was
thereupon authorized to serve notices
under the provisions of the sewer or
dinance on the above property owners

The engineer's report on the open
ing of Scovill" alley and the
extension of North Seventh street was
accepted and deeds covering the same
ordered filed with the county clerk
' Ordinance No. 804, known as the
real estate licena ordinance was laid
on the table iudeliuitely.
Ordinance'No. 806 relating to lateral
sewers on Moss street was read in fall
first time and on motion put and carried
the second time by title aud referred to
the sewer committee.
Ordinance No. 807 relating to con
atrnctinion of Granite sidewalk on J
street, read in full and carriel the
second time by title aud referred to
the street committee. Ordinance No
808, relatiug to construction of granite
walk on I street was likewise read
and referred Ortlinauce No 300 refers
to the licensing of roller skating rinks
and was read first aud secoud time and
referred to the judiciary couiuiitte.
Ordinance No 810, is an ordinance
regulating the speed and operation of
automobiles, motorcycles and similar
vehicles withiu the corporate limits of
the city. It was read the first time in
full and second time by title and re-
lerreo to tse Health committee.
Ordinance No. 801 relative to widen
ing sidewals, was laid on the table un
til the next regular meeting of the
council
Mayor Smith appointed F E Hobson
as city engiueer and the appointment
was unanimously confirmed by the
council.
On motion it was decided that the
council adjourn to Monday evening,
April 20.
Mayor Smith then designated next
Friday, April 24, as a general clean
up day when 'all residents will be
expected to get out and char their
premise of rnbbish, eto., which has
accumulated during th winter. In
the event that day is stormy and
favorable, then the following Thurs
day, April 80th, will be the date.
