"Very well," said Richard. Til give
you another trial. But understand me,
Bills, there must be no more non
sense!" I "No, sir."
B "No more brandy?"
"No, sir." v
S "And you will obey me"faoplicit)y In

"I will, so velrme!" V
"All right," smiled the Texan. Til
Wive yon an order as a starter. Just
tet those new riding boots of Lord
Croyland's, will you, and put them on
i break them In for me? I may be out
for several hours. T too will walk uo
and down In them until I return.""
But-but," protested' Bills, "them
boots Is too small for you, sir I mean,
your lordship an' my foot Is blgger'n
yours, sir," ..- -. j
I know that -perfectly,' answered
Richard pleasantly. Singular bow Bills
had rneverT before -; recognized , how
pleasant bis' master'could be! "Tfre'U"
kill two birds with one stone. Not
only will .you break, those , boots for
me, but per contra at the same time
Jou may be reminded of what It means
to break a contract with' me-. Am I
dear.?' ., ...
The. valet sat limp and j speechless.'
Be made no move" to obey the harsh
command,, so . Richard turned', on his
beek crossed to the window and stood
looking out among the trees.
.J Bills," ; he - asked . presently, till
jou noticed bow many crows 4re fly
ing about the place? I never observed
them before," 1 , ' ' - . ;;
les, yes, m lord!" the servant gasp
t "I've noticed 'em frequent, sir,
ta' an', awsklu' your pardon, sir, I'm
ready to, put the boots on.". : ' -t
' Richard watched' the "operation in
irim enjoyment The flt was tight
one, but Bills accomplished the feat
it last, though the perspiration xame
out on his forehead In' copious profu
lion. "Thank.you," said. the-Texan simply
and departed without giving any fur
ther directions. .
He enjoyed his ride with' Miss' Har-:
rlet hugely. For three long, blissful
hours be cantered with ber on beauti
ful country roads, where the air was
tweet and Invigorating, where the
scent of wfldSfl owersjcame Id thein and
the fragrlpcefof thewild v4od eef

dred times he was- on the, serge of
confessing all, of throwing himself up
on the mercy of her gentleness, but a
warning something held him In check,
and in spite of his impulses like the
sailor in the opera be remained an
Englishman. . Once; she turned to him
with Bparkllng eyes. n ;J "
"Do you know,'' she" said, "there are
times when-you-remind me so of a
man I chanced to meet that-tbat" r
I "The eowbey? Richard asked. -i,
She made no answer, but flushed and
gave free rein to. her eager horse, while
the Texan spurred after ber, Jaylng a
firm band upon ber bridle arm.
"And(if I were he. would ltmakes

la 'winning your respect and trust,
and" i : i .i i : it !
' "How absurd you are!" she laughed
in swift Interruption. "Have I not giv
en you both already? My cowboy Is
but. a memory, and you why, gracious,
bow late it's getting!., We. shall never
be In time for dinner!, Cornel"
If Richard and Miss' riarrlet enjoyed
their afternoon, the 'same could not be
said of Bills. For three loiig hours
the servant did penance for his sins,
knowing nob which" ached the most
hit bead.-, his heart or bis tender feet.
To walk was agouy. ..To sit was to
suffer with a gua wing, burning beat
that. ever increased as. his feet, began
to swell. At the end oMhe first half
hour' he determined to run away, to
hide himself somewhere to the wilder
nesa of New York, where bis master
might seek for him in vain. Immedi
ately, however, a stumbling block pre
sented Itself. To get .Into the boots
had been7 difficult. tJ get out of them
proved to be an utter impossibility!
and to run anywhere with such an
agonizing handicap was out of the
question. True, be might have cut
them off, bat In .view of the thought of
crows and knuckle bones be preferred
!to bear his inartyrSom, , ... J .
' Richard found - bio seated kn the
elpe of the bathtub, with, bis, feet; In
half an Inch of wnjni waiter a muti
neer reduced, like his boots, to a piti
able pulp.
"Hello, Woolsey," Richard asked
cheerfully, "what's up?"
:"M' lord,"' the valet watlod. "for
Gawd's sake, "elp me. sir, for I'd
rather 'ave you shoot me In the parts
wot doesn't count than wear these 'ere
blasted boots fer another minute, Mr.
Williams', sir. If you'll be so good." '
"That'll cost me a pair of boots -to
Groyland." thought Richard over his
cigar as be dismissed the wretched
valet to seek relief- below stairs. ''But
I rather think -It , was-money, well
spent"
