FRUIT NOTES
The fruitgrowers;' meeting to be
beld at Grants Piss, next Saturday,
should be well attended. It it ooly
by ooocerted action, all polling to
gether all tbe time, that tbe industry
can be brought up to tbe hign stand
ard the growers all desire. When
once Rogue River fruit becomes well
known over th.i and other countries
for being as near perfect as it is possi
ble for it to become, then w 11 the
growers receive big returns from their
labors. Bat that Utopia has not yet
been reached and may besoms distauce
off. However, thHre's no telling
how much good ca i be accomplished
by socb gatherings as tbe ons to be
beld in this city, tomorrow afternoon.
One, two or three froit growers can
not give fame to a section as a fruit
produoing country. The success of
these two or thren show what can be
done and therefore their example Is
valuable. However, before any sec
tion becomes known as a producer of
fine fruits, there bave to be inauy
growers who can produce fine fruit.
Maclifinlsslonsry work most be done.
Men most be taught how to grow the
best of froit. Tbey most be induced
to try tbe best plan after having been
taught. They must bave tbe law be
hind them with its penalty for put
ting Infected froit upon the market.
More than all this, publio sentiment
most be educated so that it will be a
dlsgraoe for a man to put upon the
market froit which will belie the
brand of the oommuulty. As has been
said, all this requires much mission
ary work, and progressive fruit grow
ing associations are constantly doing
mors and more of tbis missionary
work.
With an sx as a weapon, County
Fruit inspector Armstrong of Marioo
couuty baa begun a new battle against
Ban Jose scale. Tbe campaigo will be
waged persistently and without feir
or favor. The first attack made was
upon a 20-aore orohard at Turner,
known as the O. O. Cole orchard.
The trees are 60 yean old and bave
been badly neglected, with tbe result
that the tops are tangled, moss-grown
and diseased. All kinds of pests have
fuuLd a favorite breeding place there
for years. Mr. Armstrong has given
repealed notice without avail, and at
last hired a gang of men with axes
aud felled . the tree's. The season for
wiuter spraying is now uearlng the
close aud Mr. Armstrong iutxuda
making a gnneral campaign against
orchards that have uot been sprayed.
In the past many owners of diseased
froit trees have declared their luten-
tlou to spray their trees and have
promised to do it "after awhile," but
the promises were uot kept With
noli growers, Mr. Armstrong will
parley no lenger, hut will strictly en
force the law, making it his duty to
destroy the trees. Thousands qf
neglected trees will be brought to the
grooud within the next 80 days, much
to the improvement of conditions
under which the fruit industry is de
veloping.
Shipments of frull for the season of
1U07 from the Rogue River Valley ex
ceed oil 400 tars, according to records
of the Southern Pacific, states C. A.
Malhoeuf, district freight igeut fo
llarrituan lines iu Oregon. The uhlp
merits show an 'increase of over 100
per cent. The crop was a record -breakiug
oue at record break iug
prices. Probably two-thirds of the
can contained apples and a third
pears. Dot the Increased tonnage will
agalu im iuoteed this year in still
greater proportion, for a still greater
quantity of young , trees onine Into
bearing. From 800 to 1000 cars of ap-
plus and pears will be shipped out of
the Rogue River vslley this soason,
aud each year will see the touuaga
nrly doubled, for from 5000 to 7000
acrta of trees come into bearlug caoh
year.
These open-winter days afford a
splendid opportunity for trimming the
small 'rev. Among raspberries re
move the dead wood aud cut the
laterals back the length of a foot. If
the bushes were uot cut iu July to In
duce branchlug, theu the top third
shoulJ be cot off. The blackberry
rows should have shout the same
treatment. If the ourrant bushes hare
growu too thick, cut aay half or
two-thirds of the old wood. In every
cae select the eldest stalks to reunve.
Lave the bashes open, an. I spare only
the most thrifty of the new fhools to
take the place a yesr or two hence of
the preeeat hearing wood. This si no
applies to the gooseberry. It it bet'ITr
to trim the grape vines uow than
later In the season. Two main items
from one foot Is enough to allow to
remain to be trained up in fan shape.'
If the new shoots hare msds vigorous
growth cut oS all but about 18 InchTT
That the Oregon apple is snprtne
in every section of the world has been
noted time sod time again. now
transpires that not only are tbey in
better demand than those from ouier
sertioas but the pries Is actually three
times as high as the best eastern pro
duct sod over twice as high as apples
grown anywhere else in the world.
In London tbs Orsgon Yellow New
town tskes front rank on every occa
sion tbe price of all other apples
being governed at all times by tbe
value of the prefect from this state.
The lead in price is always main
reined but sometimes is greater than
at other periods. If Oregon apples are
scarce tbey sell correspondingly
higher no msttre how great the stocks
grown in other sections or the wona.
London appetites always psy tribute
to the worth of ttieOregoo apple; this
tribute being shown in a subitsntial
manner. News bss just been re
ceired here that the best Oregon Yel
low New towns recently sold in Lon
don at 18 shillings per boi for the or
dinary ran of first quality while the
bent Maine quality sells at that sains
pries per barrel. For lest Califfor
nia spples the London market is 10
shillings per box.
