MODEL VILLAGES.
Excellent Plan Followed by a Mining
Settlement In France.
Consul II. Albert Johnson In a report
from Liege give 'details of eonl mlu
Inn enterprises In Belgium, one of
which la planning to en ta Wish a mode!
mining village, and has engaged as
manager an engineer In charge of a
mining plant st Bethune, In France,
concerning which the consul writes:
"These French mines employ a
force of some 8,000 workmen. They
poesess 2,000 workmen's dwellings,
that are rented to the miners at from
11. IB to $1.54 a month. The bouses,
with gardens attached, are arranged
In attractive villages, with broad
streets and boulevards. Churches and
schools hsve been built. The water
supply, sanitary arrangements and the
electric light plant are all of the most
modern and np to date class.
"A, visit to Bethune proved highly
satisfactory to the officials of the Lira-
bourg region end has tended to
strengthen their determination In
building up their new organization to
follow as closely hs possible the model
set by the French mines. Thus, ac
cording to the plans, this new mining
settlement In the Csmplne will be a
most beneficial Innovutlon, and Instead
of the hitherto Insanitary conglomera
tion of hovels, piled one against the
other, without either symmetry or de
sign, the new mining village will pre
sent sn attractive and orderly collec
tion of neat cottages, grouped on well
laid out and broad streets, w ith a plen
tiful supply of good water and the
moot advanced system of electric light
ing and saultary appointments."
Novel Road Marker.
It Ir very annoying to bave grocers
wagons and other vehicles spoiling the
tswn by cutting off the corners of the
drive, and many people use white
washed stones st Intervals to waru
drivers not to come too closo to the
grass. However, these are not pleas
ing objects. A novel plan published
by a gentleman In Lawrence, N. Y.,
Is worth considering, says the New
York Herald. Three or four places
were planned together In such a way
as to hsve a private drive, and It be
came necessary to hsve something that
would Indicate by night where the
road was that led to this gentleman's
house. To save the expense of a lamp
poet and artificial light he planted
white blrcb tree which Is fairly con
spicuous except on the darkest nights
and serves all practical purposes as
well as a more exptustve and lev
beautiful light

THE MOTHERS' BATTLE.
Some woman perils her life for her
country every time a soldier is born.
Day and night she does picket duty
by his cradle. For years she is his
quartermaster and gathers his rations.
And theo when he becomes a inau and
a voter, shall he say to his mother:
"If you want to vote you must first
kill sombeody?" It is a coward's
argument. Lacy Stone.
A mother, gentle, patient, heart
broken, beuds over a handsome boy
of 21 years. Slowly an Eastern fever
is oonaoming his young life. Doctors
come and go. if arses attempt to re
lieve the pain, bat the boyish hand
goes oat in Jtearoh of mother's hand,
and the boyish lips whisper "mamma,
are yon there?" War had born de
clared. The "only boy" enlisted.
The mother clung to bim hopelessly.
Two years .she spent in days of sus
pense, lu nights of dread. Letters
from the Philippines wire not reasur
ing. At last the boy came back,
barely able to travel. Then followed
two ether years of anxiaty for one,
of suffering for the other. There
they are. Oh, pitiful sight B-ight
you g manhood, a precious sacrifice I
Heroic motherhood, an unwilling
martyr I
The mother bends over that bed of
pain. She feels the. agony a thousand
fold. . She forgets to eat and to sleep.
Her faoe is white and set. She lifts
herself up and in her blind anguish
asks: "Why, O, why my boy?"
She bad no voice in declaring war.
She bad no voice In maintaining war
Her part was merely to give her all,
bliadly to submit.
O ye, who say. "Women cannot
fight, therefore they must not bave
the ballot," to yon, I say, she fought
the hardest battle.
Today the shades are down, tbe
sounds are mufffled, the odot of
flower ladens the air, the house and
town are in moarning. Today the
mother is fighting a still harder
battle a battle that others forced
upon her. Iuto ths future we look,
our eyes blinded by tears, - and we
pray that some day, when ninn's
brains and women's hearts ara made
one not that thousands of boys in
blue will be slain for Old Glory, bat
thnt, thouands of boys in purity of
thought may help to make their
nation more homelike, this country
more of a. Fatherland, this people
more Christianlike; aye, that they
my help to make their world of
nations more brotherly and sisterly
aud dry the tears that still scorch
ths eyes of sacrificing fatherhood.

DEDUCING THE CIRCULATION
Lesson For Local Application in Money
i Stringency.
I "This financial depression," remark
! id the town philosopher, "will turn out
to be not altogether an evil If It serves
I to tench us the falue of having plenty
j of currency In circulation around
' home. There Is Just as much money In
I the nation today as there was three
I months ago, but you can't see It Our

bad to shut down, others have reduced
their working force, and those stin
running at full tilt hare had to pay
their hands in scrip, certificates and
other makeshifts for real money. Oth
er business enterprises bave had to re
trench. The effect of this retrench
ment Is felt In the home. Even Santa
Claus this season has had to cut down
his customary generosity. The little
children, though they do not under
stand why. are suffering because the
cash took fright ami went Into hiding.
"In every community there are per
sons loud In their denunciation of
Wall street, the tok gamblers, the
money manipulators or whoever It was
ihc,t nansu.,1 hp financial flurry. You
I can hear these indignant citizens on
! the street corners crying down Wall
treet with loud cries. Yet these same
' folks ore In the habit of doing things
j that tend to bring about for the home
' towu and eommuulty Just such a scar
1 city of money as this depression shows
in kind If not In degree.
"They do It not by hoarding their
I money, but by what may be called ex
iling It. You will find them when tney
have money to spend poring over big
catalogues from the gigantic general
stores In the large cities which make a
specialty of business at long range.
These big concerns believe In the cen
tralization of business. They act as pow
erful magnets, drawing to themselves
the loose cash lying around every com
munity. Our friends who decry Wall
street are frequently tbe very ones
who contribute most largely to the
city magnet They send their money
out of the community, thus reducing
tbe local circulating medium. The re
oiiit u thuf Irwnl hiinlneRH etamiates.
' the town comes to a standstill If not
actually taking the Inclined plane, and
people begin to cry that 'times are
hard.'
"Of course," concluded the town
philosopher, "when you mall your
mouey to the city you are helping to
build up the big stores there and thus
give employment to many clerks. But
what about the clerks In your own
town? What about your local stores?
Do you prefer to aid the big stores at
a distance rather than your home
stores, which are run by men you have
known all your lives? Patriotism be
gins at home. Every citizen should do
bis best toward building up bis own
community, and he certainly doesn't
add to the general welfare and to his
own best Interests In the long run
when he does long distance buying
that he could do at home."
