Proceed Under Old Law.
It would seem as though the last
state legislators was bent npoo caus
ing both the tax collectors and tbe
taxpayers more or less confusion,
judging by the complaint being made
oyer the interpretation of the new law
governing the sale of land for delin
quent taxes. Being somewbt puzzled
as to just what be should do In the
matter, Sheriff Russell wrote Attorney-General
A. M. Crawford for his
opinion on the matter and Mr. Craw
ford, who had been receiving just
such requests from all over the state,
io nt a voluminous reply, which it
w)old take an attorney to audeistand,
bnt which did impart the informa
tion that the sheriff should proceed
under the old law just as though tbe
last legislature had never bungled its
work. Before another time of year
for selling taxes rolls around, it is
hoped that some adequate legislation
may be enacted that will cover the
inefficiencies.
County Official Who Preevche.
In many a locality it is said that
"good men" are not to be foond in
politics and that only the professional
politician has any bosiuess to attend
to such matter. Bat the voters of
Josephine eouoty evidently do not
take to soch ideas, for at the last
election they selected a man for one
of their publio positions who' has
been for a period of 80 years, or more,
an ordained minister of the gospel.
That perion is County Judge Stephen
Jewell. Mr. Jewell was called upon
Sunday, to fill the pulpit of the Meth
odist oburoh, South, in absence of the
pastor, Rev. G. M. Gardner, who has
been attendioga meeting of conference
and it is reported that he delivered a
very able and introctive disconrse,
much to the edification of his bearers.

baa taken out papers, declaring it as
his intention to renounce all alle
giance to Oscar King of Sweden,
and become one of Uncle Sam's loyal

will be able to take out his final
