FRIDAY, AUGUST 9. 1807. J A QUERY. It li hot weather and we all know it, especially in the business part of town where the brick blocks confine the air ad the pavements reflect the hot rays of the tan. Now what would be more refreshing than to be able (o quench ones thirst. at a eool fountain! At the present time there if not a place where the general publie ean get a drink of cool water. Of course the stores gener ally have a water cooler but they do - not relish the idea of people running In all the time merely to got a drink and the average person does not care to do so. Now the city of Grants Pass is large enough to support a public drinking fountain and it should be consider as a necessity rather than a luxury. If we remember correctly sevoral of the good ladles of the town have raised a fund for this purpose of a public drinking fountain and the money is on disposit in one of our banks. The delay seems to bo caused by failure of our city council, to pass an ordinance authorizing its erection. Now the city authorities should surely le alive to the advantage of nn orna ment like this to our city and they should tnke some active steps to get 'he thing moving. Tho women have done their part. The warm season will soon to over and then tljero will ho more delay. There in no time like the present and it is to he hoed that at the next meeting 'of our city council some stops will he taken to allow a public drink ing fountain to he presented to the city. I'mich tip the councilman from your ward, gentle reader, and let him know that you are alive. . STANDARD OIL. The public is holding In brent Ii these days. The mightiest trust that the world linn ever seen htm been hauled Into rourt and fined like a cmuiiii'ii drunk. Judge Landis is proving the eccentricity of the family from which ho comes for the majority of Judges are more inclined to give trusts and corporations imumuity bath than thev are to fine them. Tho fine itself is startling ou account of It TlioyviranjKOtViinJwo STOCK! Jost figure this oot for yoorself and you will begin to appreciate the power of wealth when counted in the mil lions. But Standard Oil will not have to labor for thirty two tboosand years in order to raise the money to pay the fins. They oan get it back in side of a year by addiqg a cent or two on the price of gasoline and kerosene or cutting down tbe prloe that they pay for erode oil. Standard Oil is an example of what the control of a natural product will do in tbe way of power. A millionaire has no more moral right to be thief than bas a bobo. It Is only jnst tbat the law breaking millionaire should suffer a little now. Taft is coming to . Portland soon, now just watch the rest of the United States tip up when he arrives. By tbe time Standard Oil gets through paying that line, gasoline will become a rare and delicate perfume. Portlands skyscraper is about com pleted and she bgeins to feel that she is realy truly city. The gallant young man is born to trouble. The livery stables of Southern Oregon have formed a combine and raised the price of rigs. The latest thing is wave of crime that is rushing over New York city. We have heard of heat waves and salt waves but crime waves are something now. Oregon politicians seem to be liven ing up.
