All this has been general in its aim, but if you wish to make it particular and applvit to any one town, it will do no harm and may do some good. Till-: Wlil-XK Or TIIH COLUMBIA. It is getting so with the many disast ers on sea ami land that it is unsafe to travel and one is never sure when lie starts out that he will arrive at the journey end ill safety. Wrecks on the sea seem the most horrifying on ac count of the great loss of life and this wreck of the Columbia off the North era cost of California has been no ex ception. Out of two hundred passing ers nearly seventy were drowned. This terrible percentage is what makes the heart sick a ml makes one fearful of the sea, but on the other hand the per ceutage of deaths in railroal wrecks is higher than on water. Wh- i one considers the width of the Pacific Ocean it would seem almost impossible fur a collision tn occur. L. Pittock will be assured of a princely iucome no matter what their business ability. ThiB trans action may occur in Grants Pass for it is wonderful the changes that often come to a town in the short space of time of even a decade and tho young man of today can mane no Detter provision for his old age than in the investment of some of his savings in real estate. VACATION TIME. Take these sultry aftcrnjojg in mid summer and ones ambirio'is Itegin tr lag under the heat and glare o' the r.r n. It is then that one thinks of the cool sea beach or th mountian spring in the shade of mammoth trees and the long ing to 1p there proves irresistible to most of us. A certain amount of loaf- ing is necessary if we wish to preserve our health and the vacation habit is growing on the American people. Mach inery has to have rest spells as we see in the case of the rail roads where the engines are changed at division points and new ones sent out. The human body is a more delicate mechanism than the latest model from the Baldwin Works and it needs its rest spell too. The . great trouble with the average vaca- ' tion is that the person taking it prac tically exhausts himself before he starts in and then he proceeds to make hard work out of the vacation. It some- timesroojiiircs a great deal of ability to do nothing, especially in an artistic manner. The most stimulating vaca tion is where there is an entire change of scene and occupation. A person liting on the sea shore is rested and, refreshed by going to tho mountains and vice versa. The individual who does mental work of any sort; teach ing school, keeping books etc. gets out and does some physical labor which clears up the dusty corner of the brain. And the man who lives on the farm wants to go to the city and (dioot the chutes and take in nil the rattle and hustle of the city for his vacation. Everything for variety. Oft times the right people do not get tho acation that they deserve. The tired mother is often left nt homo a sacrifice to her maternal love and vour dear hubby has to swelter hi the heat to pay for the clam chowder at the seaside hotel f,,r his frivolous wife.
