We wivh it understood while fruit
is being "boosted" in different parts
of the county that Elk Valley is not
Tery slow in that line. We hare
Newton Pippin trees three years old
that we actually oounted 40 apples on
a tree and Spitzenbers, two years
graft with CO. These trees are owned
by C. T. Webb and are 'from Oregon
grown stock. Mostly from Mr. Rob
inson's nursery, although his most
thrlfy trees are some of his own
production. He has cherries that
bogin to ripen also some very fine
pear trees that can hardly support
the pears npon them, one pear tree 3
years old baa 30 pears growing npon
it. Last year the same tree matured
12 pears. Mr. Webb made a mistake
when he first oame here In buying
Eastern stock as he only has one plum
tree growing out of all he bought
from Ne York nurseries and says it
serves him right. But ob those straw

Mrs. Walter Harmon of Ornats Pass
visited friends at wilderville several
days last week.
About 20 friends gathered at the
borne of Grandma Woodard Friday of
last week in honor of her ABtb birth
day, all taking well filled baskets;
after chatting awhile, we all spread
onr dinners in the nice shade In the
yard. It was quite surprise as she
waa getting ready to go to neigh
bor's boose. Sbe said that was the
happiest birthday she ever had.
Jim MoCann is having quite a large
barn bnilt. Scott Robinson is helping
do the work.
Mrs. Elba Woodard made a trip to
Qranta Pans Monday of this week,

Two more tomb stones have been
put up at the Wilderville cemetery

Mrs. H. D. Jones and her grand
daughter Alloe Lovelace are visiting
a few daya on Uogoe River at the
borne of Mrs. Birdseye who was re
ported to be seriously ill.
The neighbors are hustling to get
the hay in their barns as the weather
indicates rain.
Our little oemeterv was. remembered
and strewn with flowers on Decora
tion day.
L. B. Akeri and M. D. Boosmau
made a trip to Grants Pass Wednes
day of this week, ranking the Unit
trio to Grants Pais for Mr. Bousman
in four months.
While Mr. fiarmon Holland was at I
the sawmill Wednesday of this week,
his team ran away, or took a spin ;
around the mill throwing him off the
load of lumber and bruised him up
considerable, and rendering him un- j
consciouH, no bones were broken, but I
his head, back and shoulders were
badly bruised.

Here we are again, all well and our
little burg is very lively.
The Grants Pass stage has been
loaded with passengers en route for
Waldo for the past week, imported
here to work at the TakilmaSmelter
which is expected to blow-in any day.
A. Scott, who is employed at the
Smelter was transacting business here
Friday.
Miss Woodcock of Kerby was
visiting friends near Waldo a few
days butt week.
Roy Briggs and bis best girl, both
of Kerby, attended the social dance
at Takilina Saturday evening.
Thomi Wimer, onr smiling, good
natured blacksmith, is doing a rush
ing business these days.
Mr. Glenn and Lee Morrison of
Monte Vista, have been registered at
our hotel for the past few daya.
Mrs. O. Woodoock and the Monte
Vista school ma'am, Miss Joeie
Hathaway, were visiting In this
vicinity last week.

breezy and aeneible suggestion in re
cent issue of the Observer on tbe ub
ject of irrigation. "Anon" has
struck tbe key note to ultimate suc
cess and endless prosperity for Grants
Pass and tbe Lower Rogue River val
ley. This city bas outgrown tbe
country aboormally and is not bs it
sboulld be. Tbe present judicious
improvements of tbe public roads all
over tbe county is one mark of ad
vancement in the right direction.
Our county court is doing its doty
along these lines. The brushing out
and straightening crooked roads and
tilling np the rats and chuckhoies and
making cement colveits in place of
tbe shaky and dangerous plank and
corduroy make shifts. By improving
the road tbe farmer and teamster can
baul from 50 to 75 per cent more to
town on the same thoroughfare and it
makes it possiole for him to me the
roads the entire year, whereas before
he could only haul about six months
in tbe year. With tbe best road bed
materials in the world as we do have
here, and cliniatio conditions favor
able, we ought to have fine driveways
in every direction from our fair city.
I would suggest, since the proposition
to purchase a rock crusher for uor
streets was defeated, that decomposed
granite be nsed as a covering over tbe
turnpiked streets. Tbis sand Is coarse
enough so tbe wind does not move it
and fine enough tojpack and make per
fect roads as it does sidewaks. It is
cheap material and easy obtained.
Why not give It a trial test? Along
witb our road scraper, our oonnty or
city needs a good steam roller to pack
the newly graded streets and thorough
fares. This would prevent dust and
belp teamsters and tbe farmers and
wben we help them we are telping
ourselves as well.
Now, as to irrigation : Grant Pass
business men are able to organize a
joint stock company and make amint
of money out of an irrigating scheme ;
but tbey won't do it. The city
should take the matter up a "Anon"
suggests and appoint a committee of
practical business men to make esti
mates of a new dam and pumps, also
to learn wbat a dam could be secured
for. A good dam site a mile from the
city can be had, where the conditions
are favorable for our oity ; both of
thete a committee should investigate.
Bonds for practical irrigation could
doobtltxs be disposed of above par and
if left to a vote ought to carry, and I
think would be the proper wasy to
bave our oity supplied with aboud-N
ance of water for fire purposes as well
as irrigate a couple of townships
joiuiug our town. This would mean
10,000 people in Grants Pass by the
time the project was completed. No
kind of mining or milling schemes
appeal to the capitalist like irriga
tion. It makes wealth where before
was poverty transforms deserts into
beautiful verdure of "green pastures
aud still waters," where the dairy
niau, horticulturist and agriculturist
reap their sine reward tlieituTemeut

The Ladies Chorus of the Baptist

Conklin, gave a concert at the O. A.
R. hall Wednesday evening which
was much en loved bv tbe audience.
Tbe selcetions were of a high grade of
musio and were rendtred in a pleasing
and very satisafctory manner. Tbe
proceeds go to help the music fund.
