The special election to be held this coming Monday, May 6, Is one of peolal Importance to every oitisen who has the welfare of Qrsuts Pass at heart. The election Is for the pur pose of deciding on th purchase of rock orusher and roller, the oost to be not less than 14000, nor more than 17000. That may seem a large sain to pot Into one investment but when one considers the results that will flow from It, It is very reaaonable'iudeed. Our present treatment of the business streets is ridioulous In the extreme. Dumping wagon load of water-worn gravel hero and there and having a thin stratnui of the same over the en tire street with the result that In the Winter time, the mud works up through the stonee and has to be scraped up aud carted o(T in the Rprlng. If wo keep ou scraping much longer, we will have canals linteal of st rets. If we wish to make any pretensions to a a city at all Hixth Street and Front street will have lo be given modern pavement. Then there Is the Western end of A strwt. Once In a while an old settler dies and we go to the funeral; now if It is In the Winter time, the condition of the lower end of A street in such that We don't have time to think of the good ipialitles of the deceased. We lire too hiiMV dodging tint chug holes and trying to keep from being covered with mud. A hunt three blocks of liiHciidiiim.cd mad would make going to a funeral not iinti such a harrow ing experience an it Is at the present time. Again a rock crusher would! prove a source of income to the city ; for there is not any doul t but that 1 the county would find It desiriblo to ! rent it or buy tin. nIoiio already ' crushed, to improve some of our main ' traveled read". "And the cat came back" has passed Into the bywords of the na tions. Everyone of ns has seen the same thing. You have lived on a farm when you got to missing eggs and young chickens aud cnoldu't think for the life of you, where they were going to. Yon laid it onto skunks, owls, hawks, yonr neighbors and everything you uoold think of and then filially you caught the old cat doing the depredating. You forthwith ties the old cat np In a sack, weighed on some stones ard threw the outfit into the duck poud and thought your troubles were over But lo aud behold, the next morning the old cat turned np In the back yard slightly demoralized it mast be confessed, wlt'i bedraggled fur and a hacking cough. You get a reproach ful look and It made yon feel kinder ashamed. Thus it is with Bloger Hermann. The Government thought it bad got him foul aud metaphorically speaking was proceeding to drown him In the duck pond bm the Jury looked at it otherwise and has said "Nut guilty." But "Our Binger" hat ontue out of it all in a somewhat bedraggled con dition.'. He evidently struck mud In the bottom of the pond and It will take him some time to scrape it off. The evidence brought nut on the trial has showu Hermann op In a light that the public was not wout to as cribe to him. Mean penuriousnees, and an almost insane greed for money, a foisting of relations on the pnbllo. Altogether it is shameful picture. Aud yet he has played a great part In Oregon affairs and time was when he was the political boss of this Snnthreu Oregon country. His handshake was famons and his ability to remember your father, grandfather and step undo was positively un canny. The Big Stick did not get him the first time but he may not be out of the woods vet. One of the Emperor William's sons fell off a horse the other dav and it was thought a worthy subject to cable to the press It was probablv caused ! by too Krt'Ht a Spring indole m e in Hock beer. Recently BiHhop Scudding made an address in Seattle and elated that it was cheaper to have a girl in the West tbun in the East.
