Let settle, draw off care fully by plugs, but leave sponge and re-p-nt operations until sufficient sponge is collected. When the water is drawn off leaving still louie in the bottom of vat, amalgamate aud filter the residue then wash it with warm water aud smelt in a crucible using nitre, oarbouate of soda, salt and borax as flux. Finally empty the tailings from the vat and sluice them iu fcluice lined with bo; Ian. The above "procedure .is cheap bui where the expenses are not considered as cio-ely it can be greatly improved upon. H. E.
