Owing to the gen eral misunderstanding that the piople of the West have of the forest reserve service of the government there was a feeling manifested by some present; that the creation of a forest reserve in this count r was a detriment to tbej slock and lumlier indiistrli m. Mr. Anderson completely allayed this feeling by his clear statement of the object of the forvst reserves 11 ml of the liberal terms and tlie co-opera-! tion that the government would givej stockmen and lumbermen The rules, governing griring on the reserves an' ' that V.V per bead per season be paid for rattle and horses, but settlers in or near reserves in.iv g'ue not to exceed i six lies. Pernoll, who is sperintend ing construction work, reported that the extension lines were strung op Williams Valley from Williams and from Provolt to Applegate and Provolt to Missouri Flat. So soon as the tele phones arrived they wold bn installed. Owing to the heavy expense of install ing the system and the few farmers taking telephones, there being bnt 25 signed for, It was decided to ask the business men of Grants Pass to each take a sharn anl hold it until the far mers could be induced too put in phones and take op these shares of stock. As s committee to secure mem bers among the farmers and to secure the oo-operation of the business men of Grants Pass, President Bulger ap pointed Charles Meserve. Fred Knox and W. S.Bailey. Tharsday afternoon this oomuiittce began their canvass of Grants Pass and to willing were ; the bnsino'S men to aid In giving the Ap plegate Valley free telephone connec tion with the system in this city that in but two and a half hoars time 23 shares of stock were sold. The com mittee will complete the canvass next week when it Is expeoteJ to bring the list up to 75 shares taken iu this city. A. T. Marshall, manager for Jose phine county for the PaclRo Statts Telephone Company, has notified Mi. Meservo that the telephones for the Applegate Company were shipped Thursday from Portland. It is expect ed to have them installed the central station established at Provolt by the middle of next week and then the free switching will beostahlished between Grants Fats and Applegate Valley. A central statinn will lie stahlished at JMurphy so loon as enough sob scribers can be -iecured which is expected to be had within the uext month, when lines will be extended down the Applegate Valley and throug'i the lection between the Valley and Grant Pass.
