MORE LAND INCLUDED
IN FOREST RESERVE
Hard on Locaters and Timber
Seekers but Belter for
the Miners.
By the order of President Roosevelt
made Monday all the timber laud iu
the United States ou vacant land is
placed In forest reserves. As Bontli
em Oregon Is tlmliered section this
nuts all the government land in the
reserve except odd tracts in the settle
incuts. The object of this sweeping
order of the president is to nave to the
people the remainder of the timber
and not let it be nobbled up by the
timlHred boarons. It will put the
lcsiators out of business. It will now
lie necessary for all Rogue River Val
ley stockmen to get a permit to run
their stock on the government laud
for all outside range in this Valley is
now lu the forest reserve. The forest
reserve will be an advantage to the
prospectors for now thev can prospect
and after (hung their assessment work
go off for the year with no fear of
Undilig on Iheir retuiii the laud and
their claim taken up by a timber lo
cator. Mines can b" developed and
wmked'on forest reserve and such tim
ber as may be needed can be cut under
a permit frmut lie supervisor
The ifovcriiiiicnt will sell timber
from the reserves to lm cut under the
regulations that will prevent needless
waste of young trees. The stiunpage
will be reasonable mid as it doc not
have to be paid until the operator is
ready to log it Willi of special ad
vantage to th" small mill men for it
will not be necessary to have a big lot
of inonev tied up in timber lands ill
order to hold it when needed.

Mr. Anderson Will Meet Stockmen
On Invitation of the officers of the
Applegate Valley Telephone Com
pany, M. J. Anderson, acting super
visor of the Siskiyou and Ashland
forest reserves, will be present at the
meeting of the members of the Tele
phone Company at Provolt on Mon
day, March 11, at 2 p. in. The object
in having Mr. Anderson at this meet
ing is that he may meet the stockmen
of Applegate and Williams Valleys,
who will be present and who will
want to arrange for graziiig peimits !
in the foreet reserves under his con-
trol. It is expected that all stockmen !
proposing to graze stock In the Hiski- (
yon and Ashland forest fosrves will
be present as application for permits '
must all be filed with Mr. Anderson I
at tills otllce in Grants Pass by April i
1st
One of the duties of Mr. Anderson
is to protect the timber on the forest
reserves uuiler his control from the
ravages of fire. To enable the fores:
rangers to patrol the reserves during
the dry season trails over which
horses can be ridden will be envt.
These trails will connect with the
various county roads that lead to or
pass through the reservations. The
government will also construct tele
phone lines along the principal trails
and phones will be installed at camps
and rendezvous for the rangers. Per
mission will tie given to have theee
government lines connected with the
lines of the Applegate Company and
the forest rangers will be given free
switching over the Company! lines
and with the office of- tupsrvisor
Andersou in Grants Pass in exchange
for the Stock men, who are members
of the Telephone Company und who
have stock ou the forest reserve, us
ing the government telephones.
Theie is a heavy penalty for rang
ing stock on forest reserves without a
permit and that all stockmen effected
may know the boundaries of both the
Siskiyou and Ashland reserves Super
visor Anderson will nave maps with
bun at tlu meeting at Provolt show
ing the limits of each reserve.
