RIVER COURIER, GRANTS
PROTECTIVE ASSOCIATION
ELECTS OFFICERS
Org&niz&tion'a Aim la to Prevent
Unworthy Pereona Receiving
Credit at Stores.
The regular annual meeting of the
Merchants Protective Association of
Josephine County was held at the
First National bank parlors Monday
afternoon when officers for the ensu
ing year were elected as follows:
President, H. L. Troax.
Vioe presldent, A. E. Voorhies.
Treasurer. H. L. Gilkey.
Board of directors, Chairman, the
president, R Thomas, R. L. Coe, H.
C. Bobzlen. R. L. Wilson, E. P. j
Dixon, Oho. Riddle. j
The above association has been in
existenoe one year and has proved
itself of great benefit to the members ,
in securing protection against those
who rnn op bills at various stores
and make no provision for the pay
ment of aocounts. The object of the
association as set forth in the consti
tution, "shall be the protection of its
members against financial losses aris- ;
ing from extending credit to any
debtor who has proven himself nn
worthy of credit, for the protection of
the consumer who may be worthy of
credit,"
In every city there are those who
make a bosiness of securing credit at
one store until credit is refused and
then the party commences to trade at
another store as long as credit will
be extended, and by the time he has
reached his limit at all of the stores
several new firms have been estab
liahed in town who do not know his
repntation or he moves to another
town where the same program is car-'
rled out so far as possible. It is for
protection against this class of people
that the association was organized
and not to make it hardes for the
worthy person to receive credit. The j
elimination of the professional dead
brat from the ranks of the consumer
will make it possible for thhe busi
ness roan to extend credit where the
favor will not be taken advantage of
and will stop one of the greatest'
scorces of loss which the bosiness
man is called on to face.
It is poiHlble that some names may
be placed on the unfavorable list
through inability to make settlement
or owing to disputed account, but
any trouble may be avoided by con
ferring with the secretary, as it is
not the iuteation of any member of
the association to work a hardship 00
any person who is worthy of receiving
credit.
