Diamond Creek Copper Mine.
A remarkable discovery, or rather a
rediscovery, of an active copper mine
has just bieu reported by Frauk Zaao
aud Osorge H. Crawford, while
working their claim, the Daisy, in
the Diamond creek district. It is be
lieved these men have uncovered one
of thu hidden cupper treasures from
which was taken the vast amount of
native copper that was sacked
pacseu one ana snipped across the sea
to the smelters of .Scotland and Wales
nearly 50 years ago. For about five
years, during the latter part of the
00's, a Scottish company, with its
own fleet of sailing vessels, made
regular trips to Crescent City harbor,
where they loaded with native copper
brought from the interior and sailed
away for the then nearest smelter, in
Scotland.
Diamond crsek district is located in
Del Norte county, Califonrla, a few
miles south of the Oregon line, and a
few miles off the Grants Pass-Crescent
City stage road. While driving a
tunnel ou taeir Daisy claim, with the
Intention of tapping the main body of
their copper prospect at greater depth,
Zaan and Crawford uncovered
heavily barred door. Further inves
tigation proved the door to be the
opening to an old tunnel, or adit.
The bolts on the door were almost
comlpletely roited away or eaten op
by copper ocrroslou. The wood was
badly decayed, proving the werk to
have been done a long time ago. The
old workings gave every evidence of
having been deliberately and system
atically covered up. When the door
was remove a glimpe of a badly
cavedtunuel was given, aud just in
side waa found a full set of miner's
tools of the oldtime tyjie. The metal
of the implements had completely
given away to coppnr corrosion.
Though the miners have not yet
hail time b reach the end of the old
adit, because of its caved and
treacherous couditiou, retiuiring new
tiinlxTs and a complete cleaning out
before it can be entered, they are
satisfied it leads to a marvelously rich
native copper treasure. Samples
found along the tunnel tloor and near
the adit prove tins.

Oar High School library is rapidly
becoming one of which we might well
be proud. During the past year about
275 volumes have be"n added, most of
which were readable books for old
and yoong alike These were some
thing which our library badly needed,
for before this addition, it consisted
only of reference books. Of more re
cent date the High School has been
preeuted with 20 volumes, including
text books of English Composition
and Literature, Astronomy, Chemis
try and History, by Mrs. John Will
iams. The Encyclopedio Dictionary
oTfour volumes aud "The Works of
Shakespeare" in two volumes were
presented by A. C. Hough. The
High School Library fund, also en
dowed the library with the "Worlds
Famous Orations' in 12 volumes.
These, together with the COO, which
we previously possessed certainly
makes a fine library for our fine High
Sohool.
Exams are over. Fun is past and
bard work begins once more. One
half of the school year has been oom-
nleted aud to many, the results of
their work is good. During the firit
semester physiology aud physical
geography were completed and will be
succeeded by botany, also tngnsu
History, instead of European, will be
studied by the Sopbos, aaa civics.
This will be a definable change to the
unfortunates who have just completed
by hard work the studies of the first
semester. A new program has also
been made, changing the time of the
recitation periods completely, bat
nevertheless, it is an agreeable change
to all.
Stella Lawson is again in school.
